Nikon Accessories from Argos?

Hi I'm looking for some advice on purchasing a few extra pieces for my Nikon D70s. I currently have 18-55 & 55-200 lenses, I'd like to get into some fauna & sports photography.

I spotted the following in Argos:

    70-300 Lens €590
    Remote Control €23
    Flash €150
What are your views on these items - are they worth the money or should I be looking at something else?

I would also appreciate some advice on:
A good Tripod - I saw one that folds down to around 18" at an airport recently and I thought it handy for travel.
A backpack for the camera, about 3 lenses, flash and a 15" Laptop and wait for it one that could be used as carry on luggage to aircraft.

Your comments will be most welcome.

First of all I wouldn't recommend buying any lenses from argos. You can get them much cheaper online if you don't mind waiting ~5days.

Your 70-300mm will cost 300-400 on sites like ebay...

here's your flash for about 85e.

and here's your lens for about 380e.

    all including postage.

the link for the lens that I gave you is from a UK seller. If want to get the lens from hong kong you'll save even more $$$$ - but you could get taxed up the arse....

Don't bother with the SB-400... it's ok for an off camera secondary flash, but it doesn't swivel from side to side, so you can't bounce for a portrait shot.

    get the SB-600 instead.

Ok thanks for your replies so far, now I'm looking for more clarification.

How good is the 70-300 lens, the SB-600 flash mentioned by Pope and can I take it a remote is a remote???

Also, going back to my OP - A good Tripod & a Backpack for Camera nad Laptop.

I use an SB-600 and I think it's great, I haven't found anything about it yet that's made me go darn, wish I'd got the SB-800.

Well no PC socket for taking it off camera, but I can get over that with a hotshoe :) seeing as my camera doesn't have a PC socket either!

I used teh SB-600 in the following pics...

    first album was bare flash
second was reflected in an umbrella

As for the remote... get a cheap 2 euro universal remote. Nikon cameras operate on the same wavelength as a Sanyo tv (not joking). This way, you'll have an extra remote in your house too!

If you prefer a bricks and mortar shop a lot of people on here recommend Gunns in Dublin - no website that I can find.

As for the tripod, I met a guy taking pics in Limerick during the week and he had the Manfrotto 785b (http://www.manfrotto.com/Jahia/site/manfrotto/pid/4006/lang/en) and might be what you're looking for.

If its the 70-300mm VR 4.5-5.6 lens then its super sharp. I've got one and even at 300mm wide open its sharp. I got mine 2nd hand boxed and will prob be looking to sell it when I get home (in states for a month) if I
    get the 70-200mm 2.8 VR.

I was away for the week-end so had no access to the net, thank you all for your replies. I think I'll give Argos a miss and maybe even do a bit more research.

BTW, is Gunns worth a trip or should I buy online?
