    Broken Flowers?

Also a Bill Murray flick and I found it had a similar atmosphere to LiT.

Love Bill Murray, but I didn't really like Broken Flowers or The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou , but each to their own.
I would highly recomment Rushmore and The Royal Tenenbaums, and of course - Groundhog Day!
But none of them are like LIT!!!!!!!

Really like Lost in Translation too - think its a very simple, effective romance filled with some nice heart and humour, and two great central performances. Think Sofia Coppola gets a lot of slack sometimes, but The Virgin Suicides (oh, watch that if you haven't already!) and this are two fantastic movies.

Some other films along the same lines would be stuff like You and Me and Everyone We Know, Once, Eternal Sunshine and Garden State. I think they all kind of fit into the same kind of likable romance genre, and do something a bit different with the standard rom-com. All of Wes Anderson's stuff, the recent Water Lilies, and Lars and the Real Girl also spring to mind.

I would personally avoid Broken Flowers though - think its a depressingly clinical, cold and pretentious experience. I know a lot of my friends love it, but I think it was one of the least engaging films I have ever seen.

    Before Sunrise and Before Sunset.

PS: if you get a chance, watch Lost In Translation over a good sound system or headphones. The sound of Tokyo is incredibly important, it's practically a character in the film notable by its near-absence in that expensive hotel.

    Yep watch these. Also Sideways.

I also love LiT. Possibly my favourite film. As mentioned the sound in this is great. I love the scene where they're running from from the nightclub and duck into an amusement arcade and run through it. Sounds great and feels as though you're there.

I'll be heading to Tokyo in a few months as part of a RTW trip and can't wait.

Lost in Translation is my favourite film. I would definitely recommend Broken Flowers. Bill Murray is fantastic in it and it has a great soundtrack.

Yeah defo watch Before Sunrise and Sunset!

Not that they're anything much like LiT tho. You see, BS and BS are actually great movies.

I would also recommend Broken Flowers if you have not already seen it yet, excellent film.

I watched Broken Flowers during the week and I really liked it. The I went on to see Rushmore but that was a different type of thing altogther.

I think Scarlett Johanssenn is overlooked when it comes to LiT...she was superb and oh so beautiful too.

I've see that on a certain website (can't remember the name) that a film called Shopgirl is rated as being similar but it hasn't cropped up here....

    Glad you liked it Fabio!!!

Agreed. Don't think she has topped her role here yet. This and Ghost World are definitely her finest performances.

Shopgirl is OK.. it is the same kind of quirky romance (with a middle age guy dating a twenty-something girl) but its a bit uneven overall. Its good, but don't expect anything on LiT level.

Oh and +whatever for the two Before films... truly wonderful films!

Must definately check out the Before films....ye guys are really rating them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,278 ✭✭✭Fabio

I must say I really liked Shopgirl...."are you happy?" was a line from it I really liked because it just seemed so applicable to all of us.

I'm in the process of getting the Before Sunrise and Before Sunset films so I'm really looking forward to those!

I've seen one half of Adaptation and liked that too, seemed someway similar to LiT but I fell asleep midway in because I was just so so tired (nothing to do with the film!).

There are some cracking films mentioned in this thread.

Life Aquatic, Sideways, Tenenbaums Before Sunrise/Before sunset

    Yet i didnt like LiT....am i wierd?

No. I bloody well couldn't stand it. And I thought Scarlett Johansson was plain as fuk in it too - hate undeserved hype like that. She has gotten gorgeous since, but back then she really was just... goofy looking.

The Virgin Suicides is MILES better.

It was mentioned already... but Garden State would be another example of a reasonably well made but ultimately aimless film.

Night on Earth and Mystery Train both by Jim Jarmusch who directed Broken Flowers might give you a similar buzz to LiT - good films whether they do or they dont.

I really like Lost in Translation. Its definitely not going to be everyone's cup of tea but it was a beautiful film. Then again i was able to relate to it.

Similar type films, hmmmm. I also liked Sideways and Garden State. Im not a fan of Royal Tenanbaums or Life Aquatic

Theres a film out next week called In Search of a Midnight Kiss which is very similiar in theme and tone to LiT and Before Sunrise / Sunset. Went to see it yesterday and really enjoyed it: not perfect, but a very funny and likeable little romance.

Garden State was almost completely ruined for me by the last scene, for me completely killing the whole tone of the film.

I love LiT as well. There's a kind of lonely-lost-with-no-answers feeling that it captures really well. And it has one of my favourite soundtracks. Didn't care for Marie Antoinette but Coppola is a real talent no matter what anyone says.

The Before films are good too but I liked Sunset a lot more. Sunrise felt too much like Linklater's contrived romantic fantasy but Hawke and Delphy are terrific. The second film is much more mature with a perfect ending.

I liked Broken Flowers but it's draining, difficult to sit through more than once. Hated Garden State.

If you like Sideways you should also check out Payne's previous film About Schmidt with Jack Nicholson, probably one of my favourite films.

Loved Before Sunrise so can't wait to see Before Sunset now!

I've been away to Boston and New York briefly so maybe having been to a really big city I can watch these films in a different way :D.

Next on my list are You,Me and Everyone We Know and then Sideways which looks pretty funny in the trailer.

To be honest I found LiT not devoid of humour but certainly not full of it either...I thought it just a great film which made a great atmosphere without making me laugh too many times.

LOL - the fawning over her at the time was pathetic!

There's a very good Austrailian film called Look Both Ways. I think the atmosphere is very similar to LiT minus the quirkyness. Its a bit more serious.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and The Cook, The Thief, His Live and Her Lover.

Both explore similar themes, albeit in much more bizarre circumstances.

Might be a differnet overall style but another film that is slow in pace but a joy to watch is The Station Agent.

    Lovely film.

    Lovely film.

I was thinking of suggesting 'The Station Agent' while reading through this thread but also wondered if people would think I was barmy for suggesting it as it doesn't at first glance seem to have anything in common with Lost in Translation...Good to know my instincts aren't completely off the wall.

Another film that springs to mind that you might like if you're a LiT fan is 'Jump Tomorrow' although again I couldn't say for sure why!
