Tax

Hi, I've a question regarding tax and wages.
I started a new job, my first in the country, about 4 weeks ago but as I did not yet have a PPS Number (was waiting on my new passport) I was told I couldn't get paid and would have to just stack up the hours.

I managed to apply for a PPSN today, but it's going to take another 10 days to arrive.

Is there any way I can still be paid? I've heard something about 'emergency tax' or even being paid in cash, with the tax deducted by the company.

    Thanks

Emergency tax is for when the payroll department know nothing about your previous employment or tax.

However, as someone who used to pay wages, I can understand their reluctance to pay you until you have a PPS number.

    I'm assuming you're not Irish?

The company could make payments to you without a PPS number but it's very unusual because they couldn't process it as payroll without the PPS number. They may make you some kind of payment and then adjust it once you get your PPS number.

Revenue can't set you up without a PPS number so without it there is no function to collect any tax from you by them, emergency or not.

Your company might calculate it and make an interim payment, it's worth asking.

Ah right. I'm born in London although for some reason my passport says Nationality: Irish. Because I wasn't born here I don't already have a PPSN automatically.

I'll ask if I could get some cash in the meantime, because I need a bit of money next week but it will be at least 10 days now before I get paid.

I was in london last summer and had the same problem except I was looking for a National Insurance number.

I got the company to give me a cheque for my first month's pay though. They dont like doing it but they dont really mind as long as its a once off. I think the cheque comes out of petty cash or something.

Of course they can pay you, in fact they're obliged to pay you for the work you do. It's just handier for them not to.

i dont think its anything to do with being handier for them not to. it would be to do with tax issues. if you dont have a PPS number then presumably you wouldnt be set up with the revenue for tax credits so they wont know what paye or prsi to deduct. so by paying you prior to you getting the PPS number they could be leaviong themselves open to all sorts of trouble.

OP, if you ask them for a sub to keep you going until its is all sorted out. i wouldnt feel too awkward about asking becuase i am sure they will understand under the sircumstances.
