What is the recommended time for the timing belt to be changed on a Ford Focus ?
I have 100k on the clock and am unsure if it's been changed.
I know it probably needs changing, if it hasn't been already but is there a way of checking this easily (i.e: for the unknowledgable !!)

I would get it done as soon as possible. Most cars are 60k miles or 5 years. It's not worth taking a chance if you're not sure. A broken timing belt means a new engine which could cost you north of €4k.

I'm looking to flog now but obviously it'll prove a turn off if it hasn't been done.
Must double check with my mechanic but can a car go to 100k without having it done ?

It is possible, but at that mileage the risks of it failing are increasing hugely.

Get it changed, and sell the car off with confidence.

I think Ford recommend 100k but you really need to get it done long before that.

The current recommendation from Ford is 105k for the zetec engines (the 1.4 & 1.6). There's no way of telling a nearly new belt from one that is nearly ready to go, so all you can do is to get it done on or before 105k. A lot of mechanics write the mileage at which the belt was changed in marker on the belt cover, so get your head under the bonnet and see if you can find it. If it does snap you're probably looking at a new engine as there'll be all sorts of damage to the valves, pistons and cylinder head.
