Using dis-used immersion supply

    Hi,

I have a query. Presently the immersion supply in the hotpress isn't used. No immersion supplied to hot water tank. Hot water tank is located in kitchen. House is circa 1978.
The question I have is can I change the Selector switch for the immersion bath/sink on/off to a 13A FCU. Then run 2.5mm2 cable to bedroom upstairs and supply three double switched sockets. Sockets will be used for two bedside lamps and a radio alarm clock & a portable tv. Using same supply and using a junction box branch off to the attic for a light. From junction box will be going to a 3A FCU and then to Light. Single pendant with only 100W bulb max.

    Regards,
    A

Before you consider spurring off from the Switch previously used for the immersion heater it should be ascertained that it is indeed 2.5 sq. cable which is used and more importantly still that the cable is protected by an rcd unit. If it is an old consumer unit with fuses then it wouldn't be a good idea to spur off for sockets but the lighting cable to the attic would still be viable. However if it is protected by a 30ma rcd then your method seems sound as long as the cable used to supply the double sockets is 2.5 sq and the spur up to the attic is 1.5 sq.
It is important to note when running these cables that all cables should be suitably mechanically protected (using pvc minitrunking conduit or similar) and all cables in the attic should be ran in the eaves and between joists avoiding the possibility of the cables being damaged. As always work should only be carried out by competent people and if in doubt an electrician should be consulted (not just via boards but it's a good start)

    Hi Sparking.

Thanks for the reply. I would rate myself as a compentent person to carry out this work in question. The cable for the immersion supply is indeed 2.5mm2. There isn't any RCD protection on the CU, never was required back when the house was built.
The sockets will be done in 2.5mm2 and then from the fcu in the attic 1.5mm2. All cabling for sockets will be ran in conduit as sockets are surface mounted. Cabling for attic will be ran in eaves of loft.
Thanks, just wanted some one else's opinion on the matter.
