Other than applying a stupid amount of pressure on one of the most delicate joints in the body i really don't see the point in the above movement.

People are starting to run away with the idea of being new and different and interesting and are often putting out, what is in my opinion, poorly thought out bull**** like the above.

Why would you basically try and turn in a compound movement into an isolation movement? It makes no sense. At all.

The whole thing about pushing sideways as a reason to do it is a load of bollocks. The amount of power you can properly bring to bear will nearly always depend entirely on your base....and if your pushing sideways your base is ****ed for a reason.

It never fails to suprise me that people will come up with this bull****. If your in weak position then better that postion.

    "Pushing sideways" my hole.

We recommend and practice fist push-ups (or press-ups depending on your jargon). Relates somewhat to a punch and are less strain on the wrist joints.

Also helps conditioning knuckles for punching/etc

It actually doesn't. There is no reason that placing pressure on the tiny bones in the hand would prepare them in any way for high impacts.

The primary benefit (if any) of knuckle push ups is to strengthen the wrist, and even at that, there are far superior exercises.

I used to hear that hand "conditioning" claptrap a lot in TKD but I'll save you some time and condense it into one easy sentence: "Want hand pain and arthritis in the future, without having to wait until old age? Well then hand conditioning is for you!"

Roper is right - having done pushups on the knuckles for years, and even on the second knuckles, they are no more "conditioned" now than they were before I started.

The only reasons that push ups on the knuckles became popular are

    1) slight different tensions and contractions of muscles, namely the triceps.
    2) helps avoid carpel tunnel syndrome
    3) people think it makes them look hard.

I do clapping fist push ups. haha,

Nah the only thing I regularly do on press ups (despite be as varied as possible) is make sure my elbows slide past my ribs - tucked like a punch like wrestling and like zhoo zhitsu.

    Peace
