Planning to get rid of Sky

Have had Sky for 15 years. Think the PQ and the SKY+ features are excellent. However value for money is an entirely different matter. Planning to remove Sky but need to check the following for the kids and herself respectively ;-)

    - the kids like Nickeledeon etc - are they available thru other satellites?
    - herself likes CSI on any other station other than LIVING and/or are they available on other satellites?
    - Is there an equivalent to Series Link on any PVR out there?

Finally if I did unsubscribe over the summer, and wanted to resubscribe afterwards, are there any deals out there for SKY HD or is it just SKY+? Is there a minimum disconnection period before any return offers are made?

    TIA

Yes Nick and kids channels are available on other satellites, depends on what kind of system you are going to have. The new Freesat service is worth a bet as when Channel 5 join it they show CSI programmes. That also has the kids channels like Cbeebies/CITV etc on it.

Some 3rd party sat recievers like the technomate 5000 series have the ability to add a external HArd disk to record onto. You would eed a twin output LNB and a second reciever if you want to watch one and record one channel.

You can pick up R1 boxsets of the different CSI shows shortly after their US air dates for half nothing, compared to what we get charged over here. Re: Nickleodeon- the kids wouldn't migrate to CBeebies? :)

sorry for going slightly off topic
Where would you pick up a dvd player that plays region 1 DvDs. How Much?. Also would a normal PC/Laptop play these?

I know this is the wrong forum but since Region 1 is been mentioned, some1 might know

R1 disks are 30% lower quality at least (480i) and suffer telecine/interlace artifacts. Much better to get "PAL" (576i).

Many cheap DVD players are region free and all give better TV picture than watching on a laptop. It depends on the firmware/driver if your laptop can be region free. Normally you can change region a small number of times and then you are stuck, unless there is a firmware or driver to make the drive region free.

There is virtually no kids TV in english on other satellites FTA.

Some kids channels are free (CitV, Cbeebies, CBBC, Pop, PopGirl, PopKids etc). Take out your card to check.

I'm sceptical that Nick in English is FTA, but I haven't checked in a while.

What Watty says about the picture quality on R1 disks is true- but they are still highly watchable. I recently got R1 boxsets of CSI Miami, for the scenery and photography (more so that the tortured right-wing ideals portrayed......). The picture can look very slightly like colour bleed, but only hinting at it.

Most DVD players that you pick up anywhere at all are Region Free (and any that aren't- if you hop on the internet you'll normally be able to find a code to enter on the remote that unlocks them).

Some of the recent players on special offer around the place (esp. the Toshiba ones) will happily upscale R1 (or indeed any region) disks.
