They are, as the name suggests, played off scratch, ie, handicaps don't count. There are Senior, Junior and Intermediate Scratch cup, each catering for a different handicap range.
I'm not exactly sure of the handicaps, but someone will correct me if I'm wrong. Think Senior is below 4, Junior is 4 to 9, and intermediate is above 9. So you could play in an Intermediate, but it would be tough for you (unless your a bandit!). There is another thread already on Scratch cups, if you have a look at that it might be some help.

More or less spot on OCH

Intermediate Scratch Cups will usually have a max h'cap limit of 16 so you should be fine to get in.

The general idea is that by grouping players of similar h'cap you remove the need for h'caps. Also, by virtue of the fact that a lot of courses have Scratch Cups, a lot of the decent players in each category will often be familiar with each other from going around the different courses every year so it forms a little tour.

so do you have to play strokeplay golf? do you have to finish every hole with a score? proper kinda golf. and are they always over two days. or are some scratch cups just one round or two rounds of golf. thanks again for the info. playing golf for years but only recently joined a club so haven't a clue about these things:)

This board is ideal for asking questions so don't worry about that.

Yes, they're always strokeplay. The main prizes are gross but there are Net prizes also (where h'cap is deducted) but these are secondary - they're there to give the higher guys in the category an interest.

Many Junior and Senior Scratch Cups are 36 in one day, a lot are only 18 in one day too but never really over 2 days.

Most Intermediates are only 18 but some are 36 as far as I know.

It's all up to the club hosting the event. Even h'cap brackets aren't set in stone. Some clubs include 4 in the Senior bracket, others have 4 in the Junior. Ring up and ask is the best policy.

Great info, they sound like great competitions.
Hopefully I'll play in a few over the summer.

Yeah, they're really good. Definitely worth looking out for. I'll send a PM to copa and see if the Scratch Cups thread can be stickied. Will be a good source for everyone during the year.
