Recruitment Agencies - Need some Advice

So I applied for a job with a recruitment agency, when contacted they asked would I like to apply for a role that I had applied for previously which I didnt pursue. I said please forward my CV to see what roles they had available.

I am then contacted today asking for me to come for an interview for a role they have at this company I asked my CV to passed on to. So naturally enough I rang the recruitment agency asking about the role, and the money was simply not enough as it would be a junior role, and I would see this as going backwards, especially in regard to the money on offer as a salary.

So I said I was unsure about pursuing this role, at this point the person in question I am dealing with got quite aggravated and said that if I was to pull out of the running I would cause him considerable embarrassment when having to go back the company as I did not want to pursue a role with the company the last time I applied.

Bear in mind I feel bad, but this person asked would I like to send on my cv to see if they had any roles , and naturally I said yes, but there was no talk of what job, or salary. I have had no interviews or anything.

Question is to all , how would you handle this, would you go for the interview even though its not offering what you are looking for ?

I am really not sure how to go about this and what to say to the recruitment agency.

At the end of the day, recruitment personnel are salespeople, like other sales merchants they have to 'sell' enough jobs to make their money/commission.

Of course this recruitment person is going to push you to take the interview if he thinks you are suitable for the job. Their loyalty is to employers, and getting recruits for them. Some recruiters will try anything (including emotional blackmail) to earn their commission.

Just ring up and tell him/her point blank what you told us, you feel it is a step backwards in terms of a job, and that he/she did not consult with you to see if you wanted to pursue the role. Don't let a pushy salesperson send you for an interview you don't want.

Dont go to the interview if you dont want the job. The recruitment agent is working for you, you dont work for him. Plus there would be more problems if you got offered the job after the interview and turned it down. Or if they asked you in the interview "Why do you want this job?" and you answer "I dont!".

If anything I would get a new recruiter or recruitment agency if you have to. But you should also give a clear sallary expectation to the recruitment agent EG I wont work for less than xx,xxx per year.

The clearer you are about the job you want the easier it will be. Remember your the customer. He makes money when you get a job. Plus to be honest he is prob loaded :)

Sound advice cronos and oakbark, my sentiments exactly is what I am thinking. I thought having come off the phone, I feel like a right a$$hole when he saying that I would embarrass him and I am screwing him around. Thats why I came on here, maybe I am being a dick head but what be the sense in moving backwards in my career starting on the bottom rung of the ladder on at least 5000 euro less than what I currently make.

Unregged, Im a recruiter if it went down as you say you have nothing to feel bad about ask recruiter straight out would they prefer you waste their clients time? Preferably in an email that states what you told us - I think they'll respond to your liking!!!!

Are you in the IT industry do you mind me asking? (reason being Im beginning to think recruitment agencies in this sector are particularly bad!!)

O that would be class LOL

Even better, turn up and say that you told the recruitment agent you didnt want the job and he said you should come to the interview anyway.

Yeah that would be funny in a way, I will email the guy I have been dealing with tomorrow and explain that its simply not what I am looking for.

I know consultech is probably only joking but seriously dont do that. you can be guaranteed the recruiter will blame it on you and it will make you look unprofessional and unreliable. if a position in that company became available at a later stage then you wouldnt be able to apply for it becuase you would be on record for not showing up before. best just to say thanks but no thanks.

what most likely has happened here is the company have a junior position on offer for X salary. the recruiter has put your CV forward for this position even though you are quite obviously more senior. so the company are delighted because they now think they are getting someone with a lot more experience for a much lower salary. so for example they were looking for someone with 2 years expereince for X salary. he has now offered them someone with 5 years expeience for the same low salary. they will obviously jump at the chance to get someone with that much experience for a much lower salary. so when you back out of the interview he is going to look like a twat because he has most likely told them that you are really interested in the position. but tbh it is completely his own fault. one of the first things he should have asked you is what your current salary is and what is your expected salary. he didnt do that so tough sh*t to him. why whould you waste your time going for an interview for a job that is too junior for you? the recruiter sounds like a complete idiot and personally i wouldnt use him again. do you really want your career in his hands if this is how he deals with his own fcuk ups? ditch him.

So I get another phone call this morning from the bloke at the recruitment agency, was very very very p!ssy on the phone, hassling for me again basically to go for an interview, seems like a right horrible person. I said to my mate in work that I am getting hassle and he said let me guess who it is, and he was right, gave him heaps of hassle also. I am not sure what to say to this guy , I dont particularily want a row, as I am still p1ssed from last week being let go from my current job "See my previous thread".

    recruitment agencies are scum.
I had a similar experience, wherby my cv was passed to someone for a position that was too junior. I declined, and the person got extremely agressive on the phone, told me that I was being childish, beggars can't be choosers, and that I wasn't going to get a better job anywhere else. I told her that she was being unprofessional and that I'd like to speak to a manager and obviously she hung up.
The company in question is a three letter acronym that have grown considerably in recent times, yet have an awful reputation for IT reruitment despite being probably the largest Irish IT recruitment crowd.

unregged, could you pm me the name of the Recruitment company. I had a bad Experiance simaler to Yours, and Would be interested if it was the same case

that sounds bizarre. how can they get aggressive with you because you dont want to go for an interview? wtf? are you supposed to just go to the interview becuase they want you to? that is just mad. i would call him back and fcuk him out of it. some cheek.

i had a feeling it was that 3 letter place you were talking about. i dont know what has happened to their IT Recruitment section in the last few years but it has seriously gone downhill. funnilly enough recently someone i know had approached me as they decided they wanted to get into IT recruitment. now they had little or no IT experience and and they had no experience what so ever in recruitment, so there was nothing i could do. i couldnt really recommend someone with zero experience. so a couple of weeks later i checked back to see what this person had decied to do and low and behold they had just started as an IT Recruitment Consultant with that company. i didnt know what to say. how can they take somneone with no experience in either IT or recruitment as an IT recruiter. i mean if you spent years in IT then you could very possibly recruit for it, or if you had years of recrutiment experience you might learn the IT side of it, but knowing nothing about either just astounds me.

Not the same company. Thankfuly most of my experiances with recruitment companys have been good. Did have one before where my cv was Changed and I was Put in for a Job i had 0 experiance for, and felt like a Prat in the interview.

A Lot of people dont like Recruitment agencys. I've delt with 3, the last one was Very Helpfull and Placed me in a Role that i enjoy, and has Proven Career progression ( i was here 7 months and Moved up the Ladder)
