Could do with some help on this...

Have a Dell Inspiron 500m that wont power up at all. I took the following steps...

    1) Checked power supply with meter (working fine)
    2) Stripped the laptop to its mobo and inspected soldered connections, they looked a bit thin at first glance, but checked them with a meter and all connections were OK.
    3) Checked it with power supply plugged into mobo, same story.

I've just got a docking station for it, so im gonna check if it powers up off that. Any suggestions?

Had a similar issue with an Inspiron if the same model, the power control circuitry (thats what I'll call it) on the motherboard could not determine what type of AC adapter was plugged in and charging it , so it would charge the battery fine for 2-3 minutes then forgot there was a chrger plugged in, run down the battery and not start up after that. Alas even with different chargers,a full charged battery etc it still happened, would eventually run down even a full battery and would not turn on after that. I've a feeling this maybe what your encountering somehow. Aside from usage for spares or replacing the motherboard you might be out of luck....either that or its something really simple we've overlooked :)

Got it to power up and work perfectly off the docking station.... therefore its a problem with the power input. I wonder can you buy these components seperately?? I'm probably just wasting my time, I'd be as well off taking it's RAM and cards and throwing the whole thing out!!

Thanks for the comment y'day anyhoo!
