ALAN OLDHAM aka DJ T-1000 (DETROIT) an introduction...

One of Detroit's most talented and venerated techno mixers, DJ T-1000 has been instrumental in the Motor City scene as a label-head and producer as well as DJ. Born Alan Oldham, he spent time as a graphic-design specialist and comics illustrator while studying media at Detroit's Wayne State University. Hired by Derrick May to illustrate the sleeves on a few Transmat releases, Oldham became interested in Detroit's electronic scene, and gradually transformed his Fast Forward radio program on WDET from industrial and fusion into techno. During the show's run, from 1987 to 1992, Oldham introduced thousands of area listeners to Detroit techno via productions from May, Kevin Saunderson, Juan Atkins, Underground Resistance, and Carl Craig — as well as other techno figures like Joey Beltram, Moby, 808 State, and LFO. The show ended in 1992 when an offer to tour with Underground Resistance as the replacement DJ for Jeff Mills proved too difficult to resist. Also in 1992, he formed his own Generator label, the origin of seminal releases by Oldham projects like X-313 ["Interferon," "World Sonik Domination"] and TXC-1 as well as tracks by Dave Clarke and Woody McBride. In 1996, Oldham closed Generator and opened a new label, Pure Sonik. He also began DJing around the world, gaining a reputation as one of the best Detroit DJs among considerable competition. The DJ T-1000 mix albums Supercollider [a Generator label retrospective] and Live Sabotage: Live in Belgium displayed his mixing genius, while his debut production full-length, Progress, appeared on Tresor in 1999. Oldham also began recording another album, for Astralwerks. In addition, he has recorded for Djax-Up-Beats(also did label artwork), Matrix, and Communique, and done remix work for Terry Lee Brown, Jr. and the Punisher.

[The Event Guide] - Alan Oldham aka DJ T-1000 Interview w/ Desy Balmer...

It is hard to pigeon-hole Alan Oldham. He truly is a man of many talents. While his dear old aunt Betty may refer to Oldham as young Alan, he is better known as DJ T-1000, however to electronica aficionados at least, he is also known as: X-313, TXC, Signal to Noise Ratio, Hardsignal, Detroitrocketscience, The Neon Sex Fiend, The Inside and more.

Perhaps best, he known for his album 'Progress' released by the mighty Tresor records, Berlin or for his striking art for seminal record labels Djaxx, Amsterdam; Derrick May’s Transmat, Detroit; and Richie Hawtin’s Plus 8.

However, did you know that Oldham was the first-ever Underground Resistance 'Assault DJ' and as such sits comfortably alongside Jeff Mills and Robert Hood, and that he was responsible for UK techno-demagogue Dave Clarke’s return to America in 2002 as part of the Detroit Electronic Music Festival.

Lesser known is that in the 1980s and 1990s he published his own comic books – Johnny Gambit, Generator and The Sexy Adventures of Orietta St. Cloud, whilst recently he made the move into fine art also, having successful shows at the Open Chicago, Paris, Los Angeles, and Berlin.

The Event Guide’s Desy Balmer caught up with the man to find out what influences such a diverse and talented artist.

Where did it all begin for you?

It began in Detroit baby! And seeing Derrick May play a set off reel-to-reel at the Music Institute, 1988.

I was born and raised in Detroit. I stayed there until I couldn't take it anymore. I moved to Chicago in 2004. My only regret is that I didn't leave Detroit way sooner, like back in 1993/94. In 2005, I moved to Berlin for an extended stay. I'd been going back-and-forth. Now I live in both places. I'm in Berlin three times a year to tour. I can't say enough good things about Berlin and Germany as a whole.

Are you strictly Techno?

I'm obviously best known for bangin' techno, but I like all kinds of music. I rarely listen to techno when I'm not working or putting my sets together. My sound is very hard to describe. I have many different moods and sounds.

Was/is there a person who needs thanked for you getting into techno?

Mike Banks, he's the man who got me started on the global stage, but Jeff Mills for leaving UR because taking his place in UR was a tough challenge, but I learned a lot - I'm grateful to both.

Who is making the best music right now?

Terence Fixmer's tracks never fail to destroy a crowd, and I'm liking Oliver Ho's new minimal tracks as Raudive. Listening-wise, I liked the last Richie Hawtin mix CD.

Is there any other DJ/Producer/Singer-songwriter you would love to work with? And, why?

I've been talking to Mr Terrence Dixon about a collab, it's just a matter of getting our schedules in sync. I've respected his music for years. He's the godfather of minimal, and super-cool on a personal level, which is rare with Detroit heads.
