    You mean the physics garden.

I've always called it the Physiology Garden/Square. According to the Buildings Office, that green doesn't have an official name, so I guess we can call it whatever we want (within reason). I think "the place people play frisbee" is what most people call it!

    It's frisbee square to me...

Does anybody know how strict they are on the black tie requirement for the event which shall not be named?
Will I get away with black pinstripe, dress shirt and a bow tie?

The suit jacket is not a dinner jacket, and by no means a tux...

I'd go with Physics Garden myself.

I'm surprised that the Building's office don't have a name for it. Most places around campus have names (whether they're used or not).

If it is the case that there is no official name, we should come up with a new one.

ilovemybrick once rechristened 'The Narrows' as 'Jack Charlton Way'. Far better name really, but not sure if it'll ever catch on.

In 6 years here I've never before heard it referred to other than the physics garden. Which makes sense, the 1905 Fitzgerald building looms centrally over its open side. The physiology building however, would be better described as beside the SNIAM and Lloyd (see here). A side-long entrance to the building points directly down the road, adjacent to the garden, but not onto it.

I'd call it the Physics Garden (while occasionally using 'the garden beside Physics').

Physics garden was what I called it as well. Zoology garden could be an apt title too, due to positioning, but i think that should only happen if the zoology department start putting animals in it.

    That'd be cool.

Well Zoology has it's own "garden" between Zoology and Biochemistry so that wouldn't do.

Cian - you'll be grand, you'll like a guy wearing a suit amongst ppl wearing tuxes but security won't bat an eyelid.

Physiology garden? That just sounds wrong. Its always been the Physics garden to me. I may have petition the Buildings Office to make it official. This nonsense must be put to an end.

With lasers attached to their heads.

Wouldn't that make it the Phys-zoology garden?

    I'll get my coat

They get kicked off everywhere else.

If you look at the actual zoology building with its entrance (as opposed the map), you'd see the zoology garden wouldn't really be a fitting name.

They get kicked off everywhere else.

Mini-rant: The complete lack of usable green areas in college, particularly for sports clubs who could use them to train without using studs and wearing the pitch down, is beyond stupid.

Topic: For the last three years, I've only ever heard it referred to as the physiology square, but to be fair, Hamilton-enders probably know the proper terminology better.

Physics garden. Never, ever heard it being referred to as anything else. Even by the people in physiology.

    Physiology square for me too.

What about "school of medicine office" - garden.... Any takers?

Jesus... I never tried to cause such a fuss.. I didn't even create this thread

I call it frisbee garden myself but I went with Physiology garden because I didn't think anyone would know where I was on about.

I'm sensing a BESS/Hamilton divide here. Except for me. But I'm pretty sure I was a physics baby that got swaped at birth.

    And the scientists have it!

The Grounds and Gardens Advisory Committee refer to it as Physics Square and Physics Lawn.

See, for example, minutes here and here.

    I'd call it..........

"The area of grass I walk past everyday and see people playing frisbee and I think agh frisbee, such a great game, I wanna play, hmmm, also I wonder what would happen if one of them accidentally hit a passer-by (i.e me) with a frisbee, that would hurt"

Pretty simple really, in fact, I'm pretty sure this will be agreed by all as a far more appropriate name.

Physics Lawn/Square is a silly name. We should vote on a new one.

    My suggestion: Bertie Ahern Square.

Given that the main activity which takes place there is of a physical nature i.e throwing frisbees I'd have to go with physiology.

Howandever If I could make up a name I would say:

The Pleasure Grounds, ahahahah that never gets old.

Can't believe a certain well-known boys school has place by that name.

My vote is for Gary O'Toole Lawn. As referenced by Ronny in previous posts I have a thing about re-naming things after under-appreciated Irish sports figures.

Before it comes up (it could there are lots of people procrastinating at the moment) Jack Charlton is under-appreciated. I think he should have been made High King of all Ireland.

    Willie John McBride pre-Memorial Garden?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 312 ✭✭manicmonoliths

I just assumed that it had no name. It's a very small space, why would it need a name? If I had to refer to it in conversation (but why would I?) I would probably just say 'that garden down by the Pav where people play frisbee,' although 'Frisbee garden' would do I suppose:)

However I do believe that there should be a referendum on this matter.

To next year's Presidential Candidates : To secure my vote, I'll need to see comittment to getting this space named. There should be a referendum held choosing a name that has the full support of students, then the SU should focus all it's efforts into getting this garden named! Now that we have library on Sundays and exam timetables out early, there really is nothing left to be done except naming stuff.

I think it's about time the laser huts were demolished and the grass tennis courts re-instated. I mean I only ever see a couple of smelly postgraduates and beige computers with CRTs in there. The botany building/physics building/SNIAM would make for a lovely quad.

The study and understanding of things of a physical nature is pretty much the definition of physics though....

Plus he should be on every television ad, not just Flora and Insurance.

Imagine him as the coach in this ad.

Perhaps call it the 'Bachelor of Acting Studies Remembrance Garden'.
