So, the story goes, ive gotten really board of my hunter recently. And after a lock in my guild who has similar enough gear to me ( if you know what i mean ) Granted he is on vind set http://eu.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Moonglade&n=Valenthar

And i really like the crazy 1200-1600 dps he can put out just using shadowbolt ive decided to start leveling mine. Started on friday, and managed to hit 60 last night up from 53.

I have a fair idea how to play them in pve. Send in the pet, dot up, drain life/man rince and repeat. And in pvp its all about huge SB crits, death coil and fear.

But any general advice would be great

Destruction.

Leaveling one my self and that is the spec im going. If you want a pvp build then something else would be better.

From my experience, affliction is best from 10 to 53 and then respec and get your felguard. Dont forget to train it!
At 67 respec to SL/SL and go back to your voidwalker.

For PvP/Arenas at 70, SL/SL is king.
For PvE with crappy 70 gear, Affliction is probably your best bet.
With reasonably decent gear (roughly 700 damage and 20%+ crit) destruction is a clear winner.

Just head straight down that Affliction tree, get Dark Pact, Siphon Life and have the Imp out, there is no down time what so ever like that just run into 3/4 mobs, SL, Corr, CoA, they should be dead then, just Dark Pact when low on mana, and make sure if got SL up you don't even need to drink.
As for 70.
If your going to be raiding 25 mans don't go near 0/21/40 till you got at least 170 hit, 202 hit if you can, and you should be fine around 17% on the tool tip, since the 5% from talents does not show up there, you also get another 3% crit from Backlash. The only reason I went Destruction at 170 hit was because I always had a Elemental Shaman in my group, giving me an extra 3% crit and hit, so I was hit capped, best bet is to go 41/0/20, or along those lines, no point going Felguard spec in 25 mans either unless you got 2/5 T5.

Keep your Felguard for now. At 70 for PvE go affliction. Your friend may be destruction, but that requires a ton of crit and being almost or fully hit capped (202 spell hit). You shouldnt be going destruction until you have tier 5, or if you get badges to spend on that new badge vendor stuff. Point being @ 70 PvE, go affliction. Raiding affliction requires alot more concentration on keeping dots up at all times while spamming as much bolts as possible.

Destruction is a much easier spec with one curse and then bolts until mob dies.

As for when to go destro over affliction gear wise? alot comes down to how well you can keep your dots up, I was in tier4 + crafted epics when I switched to destro and went from 950dps to 1100 dps on bosses. I have seen plenty of warlocks in tier4 gear who struggle to do 550dps on bosses.
