Spar Mile Challenge

Anyone know what happened to the Spar Mile Challenge? Is it still on this year and is there a list of venues and times?

I had it down as being on May 11.

The fixtures list on athleticsireland.ie where I am sure I saw it a few weeks ago has disappeared and the link on the website header seems to be 12 months old.

    Thanks for any info.

We're still having our mile challange this Sunday (11th) in the Charlesland Track, Greystones. What if any involvement Spar have with it I don't know. It starts off at 10.30 in the morning and we'll be running it similar to last years event. It is part of our fit4life league, entry is about 5/6 euro.

I was on in July last year, maybe it's the same again this year...

I presume the Spar Mile has lost its impetus now that Brendan Hackett has left as that was one of his babies. Its scheduled for Sunday and they had even moved the AAI Games/GV Ryan meet to a saturday night to accomodate the thing (I'm presuming thats why its on a saturday?). Only second guessing but I'd say the new regime may be focussing more on the competitive side of things as its a huge year with Beijing.

Its a good initiative but was a disaster last year regarding the numbers they received and this year there has been much less/zero coverage so it seems to be dead in the water with the clubs having to use their own initiative to keep it going.

I'm in Dublin for the weekend and might go see these AAI Games if they were worth a look? What level of athlete will be there and what events will be taking place?

Think it's down for a 5pm start time Saturday evening?

I suppose what you could call the 2nd tier of athletes will be there (or should be there unless they are too big for their boots). The top, top guys and girls are still in Portugal at the training camp and this would include the Olympic qualifiers and the potentials. AAI usually use this as part of their selection process for the Europa Cup so there is a lot to be gained by the athletes and a chance to put down an early season marker so the standard should be high enough especially as its in Dublin. Events are 100,400,1500,3000,400hurdles,HJ, LJ, Jav, Shot and then both relays. Its a pretty tight program and will cram a lot into the 3 hours.
