    Hey,

I used to love picasa on my windows machine but these days I use my macbook to store my phoos and a really dont much like iPhoto.

Are there any better pieces of software for photo management?

Its not too big a deal if I have to pay for it.

Aperture would be Apple's more professional photo management software.

Can't say I'm a huge fan of it though... although I really haven't taken the time to get to grips with it properly yet.

Lightroom is good on the mac, certainly better then windows.

iPhoto sucks due to the way it stores all the photos,

But LightRoom is not really for photo management, is it? Anyways, I would say Lightroom is far better than Aperture too.

Aperture 2 is a huge improvement over version 1/1.5 for anyone still judging it on the earlier version. The speed has dramatically improved and the filters and adjustments make it a one stop shop for my photos.

Would have to go with Lightroom, it's fantastic for organising/tagging/cataloguing and processing your images, creating slideshows, exporting galleries to the web or print, converting from RAW etc etc.....

Bear in mind it's a full on app designed to handle thousands of images and will require a lot of study to get the best out of it. And I mean a lot. On that point there's no end of tutorial sites out there and Scott Kelby's book on it is fairly authoritative.

It's also about €300 from Adobe's Irish site or from Micromail so it's far from cheap. However if you spend a lot of time working with images it will pay for itself in a week. It's that good. If it's for pics of the lads down the pub then a more lightweight/free app would surely be suited better.

As of release 1.4.1 it seems to run quite a bit better on my windows box than it does on my mac running OSX 10.5.2. But to be honest that's an apples to oranges comparison in my case. I'm not sure how it would handle on equally specced machines.

I did try Aperture 2.0 for a bit but I'm afraid I was guilty of ditching it before learning it's intricacies so I can't really compare the two.

Lightroom version 2.0 beta is available for free from Adobe, so you can always use it for a month and if you like it enough then you can decide to purchase.

Or if it melts the head you can just ditch it.

    Best of luck!!

Pixelmator is pretty good, but again not really photo management. There is a photo browser in it though.

I have found picassa and iphoto on par for both platforms, both do a decent job of editing (for the consumer) and both allow you to upload to your google web albums. There's photoshop elements again not really a way of storing and managing your images but a light version of the very powerful photoshop. You could also check out the photoshop freebie online.

    see how that suits ya.
