RTE after canceling Sky

    Hello,

I'm seriously thinking of canceling Sky in the summer (first 12 months will be over). I read that not only do you keep the Sky box, but you can still pick up FTA channels (:pac: I was amazed by that!).

But since Sky broadcast RTE via their satellite, and UK main land can't watch RTE, will I still be able to watch RTE? (especially for the Champions League and the irish commentators).

No, You need the basic subscription to view RTE on SKY. RTE is not FTA.

Thanks for your fast reply... I would have thought so. Might buy an internal aerial or better wait for DTT. Apparently, it might be available before the next St Patrick's Day...
I had it in France, the image is stunning (better than satellite I thought)...
    Damn Murdoch tho :p

The main advantage of DTT over Analogue for RTE is Widescreen. If you can't get good quality Analogue on aerial, you may not receive DTT.

With the pressure to fit channels per mux, it won't be better quality.

A minimum Sky sub gets RTE, TV3, TG4 at the minute. Less than 80% receive terrestrial TV3 as they don't pay to be on all the repeaters. RTE DTT will not be on former repeater sites mostly. Exceptions are Woodcock Hill and Spur Hill are not repeaters any more, but fed direct in readyness for DTT.

Diaspora TV may be on by next St. Patricks day. That will be on Freesat and wont show Champions league soccer (because we are a small country with a big spill over). May be RTE could FTA the audio commentary (nah!).

DTT is on trial now. It may get a conviction and a 15 year sentence, expect to see it before July 2009 or now if you live in the north east or in Dublin, with freeview type box, cost circa £18 from Aldi.

Otherwise if you are looking for television without frontiers (RTE beyond encrypted sky) you may have to settle for RTE on bunnies ears and watch snow showers indoors.

Most TVs sold in the last 2-3 years have integrated digital tuners capable of picking up the DTT trials. Get the manual for the TV out- its entirely possible if you have a panel that it may be ready to go for DTT......

That's true till they decide to use MPEG4, which will happen eventually, then you'd need a very recent LCD TV..

Get yourself a small outdoor aerial if your tv has an analogue and digital tuner you may very well get the best of both depending where you're located.

I'm in the Sandymount area I've a FTA system and on my PC I've installed a Hauppauge HVR3000 tuner card which has DVB-S, DVB-T and Analogue tuners I receive all FTA Sat channels on Astra 28 plus via the outdoor aerial RTE1, RTE2, TV3 and TG4 in Analogue and the digital terrestrial broadcasts from three rock

    Hope that helps
