why are CYM allowed stay in the Irish Senior Cup given they pulled out of the Senior league? Seems a bit odd, also they should really have to play all their games away as I don't think a mat should be allowed in the ISC.

They didn't pull out of the Senior League, they were refused permission to do so. They withdrew their seconds from Senior 2 instead.

As regards the mat, there are many in Leinster cricket circles who would agree with you.

i was playing there this evening actually - im very surprised they are allowed play Irish Senior cup matches there.

Why don't they provide grass wickets? Is it a money thing (groundsman) or is there a river or something running underneath where it would be?!

During the winter they play rugby on one side of the mat, soccer on the other.

I played a game there last year and it had to be held-up whilst they got some tacks and re-tacked a section of the mat back into place.

I feel sorry for them, they are between a rock and a hard place - what they are trying to do is to drop a few leagues and re-group rather than keeping an artificial position and not competing. But then again it isn't fair to any of the "junior" clubs. From what I have seen the standard of some of the 2nd XIs in Senior II is higher than a few of the "senior" clubs 1st XI. Part of the problem is the starrings process which allows most senior clubs to have some of their better players below the line of their first XI and thus dominate a Senior II game with bat or ball or both. Fair enuff if it is a kid on the way up and looking for as many games as possible to improve himself but having a 'seasoned' pro (not professional) below the line is a joke. A simple solution would be for the below the line starrings from Senior I not to allow guys in the top half of the teams batting or bowling avgs. below the line. That would ensure that the 'fringe' / out of form players are the guys that rock up in Senior II games.

Anyways, back to my beer ;)

I don't feel any pity, they have been given numourous warnings to get their act in order, yet year after year they play on that, frankly, dangerous mat and shoddy outfield. The sports club isn't short of money, and the reasons given by them were that they haven't enough players to field three teams, so they wanted to drop from Senior I. If they had a decent welcoming ground there would be no issue with losing players to other clubs.

Their latest plea involves asking to be allowed play two professionals, which has some precident in the Old Belvedere case of a few years ago.

What really gets my goat about CYM at the moment is the incident about their new South Africian. Another LCU club spent three weeks registering him, and 24 hours before he was due to take the field, CYM offered him money to play and he was registered for them overnight. It seems they built on the process that was almost completed by the other club to register him quickly, and somehom the blind administrators in the LCU didn't question how he had suddenly changed clubs. In frank, this amounts to player poaching. But the LCU don't care. They also seem to be to be turning a blind eye to his lack of a work permit, which CYM made no effort to arrange prior to signing him.

In all my dealings with them they seem like a nice bunch of people, but I have no pity for them!

Gasp, shock, horror - Overseas professional elects to play for a team that offer him more money

An interesting perspective on "employment" and freedom of movement there JJ - are you advocating that an overseas person being employed in Ireland is "tied" to their prospective employer and not allow to be employed by anybody else?

I thought the nature of professional sports persons, especially on short-term, contracts are based around earnings, pure & simple. One of the problems with pros is the level, if any, of commitment to their hosting club. Some have worked out very well over the past few years, others have turned out to be turnips and both parties couldn't count down to mid-September quickly enough - if indeed they waited that long - wasn't there a pro shown the door before the end of May last year?

I think your beef should be with the LCU - for not the first time they have proven themselves to be ineffectual. While the Irish Cricket Union may have had an overhaul, ,as with all entities it is the sum of all it's parts and until such time that the regional unions are likewise revamped and brought into the 20th century (yep I know this is the 21st century but jumping 2 centuries might be too big a leap for the LCU !!!) the game will continue to decline in Leinster.
