Weird noise from front end

When my car starts up from cold, there is a strange whirring sound through the first few gear changes. Then it disappears completely. This noise has only surfaced recently. I thought at first it was from the front left wheel, but it's definitely coming from the middle of the car. Any ideas? It's an auto box, by the way.

what type of car, age and milage? Diesel or petrol? How long has this been going on? Is it getting worse?
Sounds like a bearing in the gearbox though.

It's a 1999 Jag XK8 with 74k. I'd imagine this could be €€€€ Thank God I have a warranty on my engine and gearbox!
