    hi all

The girlfriends parents computers cd drive wasnt working for the last few weeks since one of her friends took it out for some reason..

I plugged it back in correctly, and it seems to be picked up ok but sometimes when booting it stalls on the cd rom drive.. and the pc doesnt boot at all, but the light on the cdrom drive is still flashing? I thought it was the boot order was reset or something when it was plugged out but its still at flopy/hardrive/cd.. so not sure why thatsw happening, there is no beeping from the mobo or anything when booting so really not sure what is going on?

    Any one have any ideas??

thanks in advance for any advice..
    neil

Does it work in windows? Change the boot order is the simple fix.

Check that it is installed correctly. If it's on the same cable as the hard drive it should be set as slave and some hard drives need to be jumpered as 'slave present'.

IMO it's always best to have the CDROM on another cable completely from the hard drive. If you've no other drives, then you have a spare IDE header on the mobo going to waste.

Also check to see that all add in cards and RAM are properly seated. Video card especially, it's possible that something was disturbed when things were disconnected and reconnected causing the problem. Chack all cables that they are connected properly, such as power, floppy, Hard drive and power to mobo.

Actually, seeing your last post the first hing I'd check is the floppy cable.

Hmmm, I missed the boot order in your first post. Ok, that's not gonna help. Is it on a seperate IDE cable or is it shared with a hard drive? What are the jumper settings?

SET to slave if its same ide cable as the hardrive drive c:\.
Set 2 master if its on its own ide cable .GO 2 bios set boot order hd, floppy, cdrom.or hd o,hd1, floppy ,cdrom.USUALLY holdown del key during booting up pc gets you to bios mode.

    thanks for the replies guys..

the cd drive is on a separate ide but i havent checked if its set to master, the thing is it worked before it was plugged out so i doubt i have to change it back to master (unless it resets automatically)....

Now that you mention it.. i think the guy that took out the cd drive put in a harddrive to tranfers some stuff from his hd.. do you think he would have have changed anything to do this?

Right.. im gona try rebooting, checking the boot order again.. if that doesnt work, i will check everything is still in place.. if that doesnt work, suppose i will check if the guy changed the jumper settings on the hd so his one would be master or something. if that doesnt work i will be back to you guys:pac:

ok it looks like it was the boot order:o my mistake, i though it had the hd first but was actually the cddrive.

one thin i noticed is that the cddrive is the master and the hd is the slave... should i change this anyway. What kind of effect does it have either way?

    thanks again for the help

It doesn't really make any difference if it's on it's own cable. Some CD's don't like to be master if there's no slave present.
