Bluebells

I've taken many photographs of bluebells but have never been really been satisfied with any. I've seen some great shots with the ground a veritable blanket of blue and mist wafting through the trees in the background. Short of hiring a fog machine from a Hollywood studio I don't think I'll ever create such a shot. I went to Ballyannon Wood near Midleton this morning and this was the best I could do. I gave a burst of diffuse flash from my 580EX 11 to add a touch of sparkle to the foreground.

The composition is nice John, but it appears somewhat oversaturated and sharpened to me.

Very nice John. My head tells me it's a bit oversaturated, but I like it! (maybe I've been paying too much attention to the whinging in Amateur Photographer of late)

The slam-dunk of spring photography yet one of the hardest shots to get right. The light is never quite in the right place.

That shot has a bit of the John Hinde about it. Which is grand if thats the intention.

    Mike.

Hi John, I feel your pain, I've been trying for the last few years to get "that" bluebell shot and never been 100% satisfied.

I like loads about this one of yours, but am wondering if you really needed the flash, the foreground flowers look slightly wrong to me, and maybe the whole thing is slightly over bright, (but that could be my new laptop screen).

Im interested to know if you think that this years display of bluebells is slightly disappointing compared to the last two, it would seem up here that the flowering is slightly more spread out with maybe a lower longer peak.

I agree. I thought it was just my local wood that didn't have as good a display as previous years but clearly it is a more widespread phenomenon.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I did boost the colours a bit and the flash did introduce a certain artificiality into the scene but that is the effect I was after. I'm pleased with it.

    Regards,

    John

It looks a little over-saturated to my eyes, but I'm just nit-picking.

All my local bluebell hotspots are pretty much dry this year. Only one or two in sight :(
