I don't think http://www.venere.com charged me anything for booking.

If you join one of the chain hotel's loyalty programmes and leave a credit card on file (securely) you can choose a room that they will not charge your card on untill your arrival.
You usually have untill 24hrs before arrival to cancel as no shows are with most hotels charged one nights stay.

    Examples include www.spg.com

Aren't most hotel sites like this?

I really can't remember the last time I booked a hotel and it was debited from my card right away.

I think it'd be easier to list the sites where you have to pay up front :)

I booka huge amount of hotels because of my job and the rule of thumb tends to be that if you book directly with a hotel through their website they don't take a deposit. However, if you go through any of the 'mass' booking type websites or cheaper deal website they will take part or all of the cost up front.

Also, if there is a hotel that you like, then call them and ask. Most will take your card number to hold the room but very few will take any money from it until you either stay with them or default on the booking.

    www.yeego.com

They take your money 14 days before travel.

Beware if you have preplanned to default. They hold room but may charge some booking money if you don't show up...

Perhaps this could be made a sticky and other links added as time goes on, very handy thread.

You know when you say they don't charge the card until you get there, is it possible to just pay in cash when there as I'm going with a group of mates and I'm the only one with a card and don't want to have to pay for all of them as it's too messy!

I'll do some back-seat modding and say "no" as we have a lot of stickies already but don't see why the thread itself can't be referenced to in a sticky.

Depends on the hotel. Normally they ask if you want to pay with the same card as you used for the booking. This is an option.

The only time I ever asked to pay in cash I was refused (hotel in Windsor, UK)
