Changing K800 for K850

I have a Vodafone K800i which I am very happy with, but I have it 17 months and usually change long before that. I have been looking at the K850 which has the 5Mp camera and maybe a few other differences. I am an ardent SE fan and won't really consider anything else. I also don't want a lesser camera than the 3.2Mp in the K800.

Has anyone got any opinions on whether I should upgrade to the K850. I would particularly like to hear any horror stories people have about the K850.

I have not heard much good about it - as a member of the forum at www.esato.com (talk about ardent se-fans!) I couldnt keep track of all the horror stories!
A friend of mine is on his 4th in 3 months!

I work in a mobile phone shop in Dublin city centre. The K850 isn't what I'd call a "boomerang" - a phone that keeps coming back or crashes on a regular basis (my p990i).....

One of my colleagues has had one since they were first released on o2 without a bother. On the flip side a friend who has one on o2 uk has had nightmares with hers.

You get duff phones regardless of who makes them, based on what i've sold and seen come back i wouldn't call it exceptionally unreliable.

I have a K850i since it came out in December, and its a decent upgrade from the K800i (which I had for a year).
The Camera is a bit better, you can tweak photos more than K800i (Picture quality doesnt increase with Mega Pixels)

I use it as a HSDPA modem,so i get speeds double that of the K800i.
Organising text messages is nice too, you can organise by dates.
TrackId is handy too, use it from time to time.
The biggest improvement is in the media player, scrolling through the photos is pretty nice, and the vibration when touching the screen is nice.

You need a new firmware for the above, I would recommend in increasing to the latest firmware R1EA037

Best advice is to try it out, key layout is bit different than the K800i

How do you get the new firmware?
Do Vodafone not lock the phone to a firmware version.
On my K800 I have never been able to update the firmware. Each time I check I get told that I already have the latest.

I debranded my O2 one using davinci, vodafone destroy phoness with their pesky firmware
I installed an early "Generic K850i Firmware" from R1CA029 and then
you can use the "official" Sony Ericsson Update Service from their website.
    http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/support/updateservice?cc=gb&lc=en
That will always give you the latest update.( they update every 2/3 months)

Would anyone recommend a good place to buy an unbranded K850. Expansys.ie have the blue one for €334.95. Its says UK after it. Would that pose a problem using it in Ireland?

Nope it will work fine, just get the WAP and MMS settings from the Sony Ericsson website and Update the Firmware to the latest and you will be sorted.

I have looked at this phone on expansys.ie and expansys.com. With the way the euro is against sterling at the moment it seems a good bit cheaper to buy it from .com instead of .ie. Will they sell from the English site to Irish addresses does anyone know? There is no way of seeing if it will work until you put in credit card etc.

Just proceeded a bit further and they will sell to Ireland.
Costs €351.29 incl postage from .ie
Costs £263.99 incl postage from .com

Think its a bit cheaper from UK
