This coming friday I agreed to photograph a how would I put it 'before wedding party' but its no ordinary party its in a posh hotel with about 150+ people attenting. The part I need advice on is when they head into the dinner/dance/bar section where the light wouldnt be the best, abit brighter than pub light. I own a Nikon d1x and 28-80 and 28-300mm lens and nikon speedlight . I reckon a f1.8 50mm would be a good answer to this but what would be the best way out of this??

The equipement is enought IMHO. You can bring out the best of it, just take care about the CF ( 4 GB to shoot as many as you can ). You might get some with motion blur, even if you have that nice equip..

As for the flash would I need a some sort of diffuser as I rarely use flash?

I think flash would be good, but you can handle without it also or just use the camera one.

A stofen omnibounce would be great, when I'm shooting events like this, I use my 24-70, flashgun and omnibounce.

Put the flash head at an angle with the diffuser.

Would not that brighten up the image unnecessary ?
