    Hi all

One of the guys in the local tae kwon do club is looking for a machine that basically tells you how hard you hit it. He wants something solid enough to take pretty heavy strikes, from both hands and feet and he wants to know if he can get one in ireland?

Anyone know if such a thing exists or is worth getting?

    Cheers

the only thing I can think of is a force plate. we use them to test forces in biomecanics, you can get portable ones tat could be taped to a kick shield, but i reckon they could be prohibitively expensive. theres a company called Bertec, but you have to email for a quote, and they might not do the flexible mat type that you would need.

I don't have any experience of them myself but http://www.imptec.co.uk/

You could go to Dr. Quirkey's and wallop that punch measuring thing. We went in there one day a good few years back and were throwing spinning kicks at the yoke and all before we were politely asked to leave it alone.:D

I seem to remember Tim Murphy doing some kind of scientician's experiment with a power leasuring kick shield. Ahem, just to be anal at this point, that is what you'd be measuring, power, not strength.

From what I remember Force was a different thing to Power (usually used wrt electricity), i reckon it's force that is being measured here.

Yeah i got kicked out of one similiar in wexford for the same thing. :o

well i'm a bit happier that it wasn't an obvious answer so at least i can pretend i know what i'm talking about. although if ye start comparing strength, power and force, i'll happily sit to one side until the debate ends :D

Is it not energy transferred? A non-accelerating kick can still do some damage. This should have been on the LC Physics syllabus.

I work with force and impact measurement and have colleagues who deal with injuries to the human body sustained by various impacts. Trust me - it's complicated, so if anyone sticks up f = m*a could you please just box yourself in your own head about 6 times as penance.

To the OP, I can tell what kind of instrumentation you would need, but I presume you're looking for an actual commercially available product you can just buy and use for this purpose?

Indeed I did! :) Although my find finding were widely deemed heretical by those in the ITF TKD community (eh Jon? ). That's where science gets you! :D

We used a students project in a lab in UL for it, not a commercial product.
