Back riding

I am taking riding lessons again after being away from it for many years. As a child we had ponies, and I used to ride on a regular basis. Does any one know about livery and good riding schools around the letterkenny area? I have just moved there after living away from donegal for 14 years.

Also what type of horse should I be looking at buying. Height etc, I am 5ft 8 and 31 yrs old:eek: still cant believe it!!!! Obviously I wont be buying one any time soon but it just gives me something to aim for. I like the look of the cob, they are so beautiful, all I really want is one that I can mount
    easily, and is quiet.

    Many thanks :)

    Don't know anything about livery.

    You should ask yourself:

    1. What you want the horse to do? (hacking/competing/pleasure riding)

    2. What experience you have (competence and confidence)

    3. How much you will want to spend?

Cobs are nice if you are of limited stature :D and there are some really nice ones around at the moment. I sourced a nice cob for a customer before. It had done some working hunter classes which are great because these classes test a horses temperment/confirmation/jumping ability. Quiet expensive but a little smasher with a kind personality and stuff.

    • You're probably looking for a mare or gelding (obviously no stallions!).
    • Height? Probably around 15 hands.
    • Age? Four years or older (no colts or fillies).
    • Soft-broke or hard-broke? I prefer soft-broke, but some will claim that hard-broke are less head strong and easier to ride.
    • Quiet disposition and easy to mount? Buckskins are that way (Have you seen the old DVD film, "The Man from Snowy River?" There was an old mountain horse that could have been a buckskin, although probably mixed breed). No matter the breed, the best way to find out is to ride before you buy (be the first rider early morning, too).
