AIDS Problem in thailand

I have heard about this Irish guy who lives in Thailand. He is a friend's mother's friend's brother.

He has aids and lives with a prostitute.

I heard all this last night from a friend and he was of the opinion that the prostitute was not aware the guy has aids. He has been living in Thailand for a while and she is more than likely infected now. There is every chance he'll sleep with others. He is from a completely disfunctional family, and heroin has played a major role in the past (and prob in the present too)

I've never met this guy, I don't even know his name. I know he has a sister in Ireland who I could prob get in touch with, and if I tried hard enough could probably get some info on him within a week or so. He claims disability welfare from Ireland and he can access it from thailand, so the state certainly know who he is and could more than likely get in touch with him

People I know, who I trust and know are good people have done nothing. He might have infected this Thai prostitute who in turn might have infected some randomer etc etc and so on it spreads. I've waited 24hrs to do anything about this, if this guy sleeps with some randomer once a week, then me waiting 24hrs is 1/7th of a murder is it not? I can't get my head aorund this... It's like that quote I remember coming across, "Man is guilty of all the good he never did" or something like that..

What do I do? Do I have any responsibility to report this to the guards? Will they do anything? Where do I start?

Everyone who he or the girl sleeps with know they're taking a risk of contracting AIDS everytime they have unprotected sex. If they don't use a condom at least they know they're gambling with their health, so don't feel too guilty there.

If you managed to track this guy down, what exactly would you say to him?

What do you expect the guards to do if you tell them that, through a distant connection, you heard there's this guy living in Thailand who has aids and is living with a prostitute?

    I can see it now.

"Good luck to him. Get out."

Your friend's opinion might be misinformed. The prostitute might be fully aware the Irish bloke has aids. The Irish bloke might not even have aids. The prostitute might not even be a prostitute. There is no spoon.

Go to bed. Wake up tomorrow and volunteer at a local soup kitchen. Then find just enough religion to take the Serenity Prayer to heart:

God, grant me the grace to accept the things I cannot change,
the courage to change the things I can,
and the wisdom to know the difference.

and the wisdom to know the difference.
Thansk for the reply, I am stuck somewhere in the sentence above... A few people I have talked to have taken your stance, and just shrugged it off, but I tend to disagree with this train of thought. I think this IS something I could help with, I just need to know where to start.

I could say with most certainty if we left this scumbag roam thailand for the next few years at least one more person will contract the virus.

I am fully aware the guards will do **** all and laugh about it, but I'm thinking more along the lines of getting the government to cut off his disability benefits and get him back to Ireland where he can be dealt with.

There's not a lot you can do OP.

How do you know she didn't give him the AIDS? In her line of work it's always a possibility.

If you are that concerned OP get on a plane to Thailand. Good luck getting through to the guy.Junkie/pimps are notorious for not listening/caring...
Once you've failed in getting him to give a toss you can always contact the Thai police. They're tough on drugs.

He is the one with AIDS, and has had it a long time through heroin. He moved to thailand fairly recently to live off the social welfare he was receiving.

While I'm all for social responsibility, I think you need to start a little closer to home. MAJD is right tbh - stop chasing fairies abroad because you heard something vague and disturbing about your mother's dog's friend's cousin's imaginary friend, do something constructive in your local community instead.

    ROFL
Do u know you local councilor that would do someting about this. She prob already had aids. The councilor might have the right conections to do something about it. Your aquantiance will probably die soon, but sure you didnt shoot him up with the herrion. But maybe your mother's dog's friend's cousin's imaginary friend did.

While my connection to the guy is vague, the facts are not. Please don't confuse the two. There are no fairies or imaginary people in this thread. The facts in my original post are not heresay or rumours. I don't want other replies in this thread to be tainted by your interpretation of the facts. I hear rumours the whole time, and don't bother with them. This is most certainly not a rumour.

She probably already had AIDS? lol, great attitude

mods, please warn anyone who mocks this thread further. this is a serious topic and these sort of replies are not helping

Jimbobs, how do you know? If you don't know this bloke personally, how do you know he has AIDS? How do you know who he's living with? How do you know the girl he lives with is a prostitute? You start this thread with "I have heard about this Irish guy".

Why should we presume you have a single one of your facts right? Because you think the sun shines out of the arse of your source?

True, some of this is vague and we could be here for a week arguing about what's fact, but for the purpose of getting some advice in this thread (and for that mnatter any thread ever posted in PI), I think it's fair to ask people to assume the facts are true.

Once I have a general opinion from here I was going to look up his sister and try to gauge how accurate the info is and progress from there

+1 well said MJD. OP first off are you aware that there is already a huge issue with HIV and AIDS in Thailand mainly due to sex workers and people going there for sex tourism? The Thai government are very aware and have been going to great lengths to deal with the issue and have actually made some good head way.

Secondly you say he has AIDS - does he have full blown AIDS or is his HIV+? Is he getting any treatment for his illness? You say not to mock this thread as its a serious issue but you've only given a few bits of information that may or may not be fact. You said it yourself you don't know this guy, you don't know what stage of the illness he is at, what his relationship with this woman is, if she is infected, if both are infected if either of them gave it to each other, if either is getting threatment and if the local Thai health service is aware. Your making alot of judgments based on very little information.

Leave the modding to the moderators.
I will not bias a thread becuase of your say so, as long as no charter rules are broken people can state their opinions.

Crip17: tone it down and read the charter

What is YOUR issue? That you feel obligated to do something? If so do it and if you are laughed at fine.

You are making a lot of assumptions about this guys lifestyle in Thailand.

Rumours is rumours..if you wish to act on them..then do so, be prepared to deal with any consequences.

As other have pointed out it has nothing to do with you. If your so concerned start by volunteering for a charity/organisation here.

What exactly are you hoping to acheive ? That every person with AIDS/HIV should start clanging a bell and proclaiming themselves unclean like the lepers used to do so no one else gets infected ?

I hope this thread is a joke but if not, you really have very little to worry about.

I'm not dealing with the world's AIDs problem. I'm dealing with one guy from my community. I can get in touch with his sister who might be able to help.

Never mind anyway, thanks to anyone who replied. I think I went about this thread the wrong way and I can't see it serving any further purpose.
