So I want to get back into MA

    Hi All,

In my recent efforts to get back to my old (good) ways, i.e. not being a fat mess, I'm going to the gym regularly and playing football once a week. I feel like I could be doing more, and while the gym is a good stress reliever and football is a bit of craic with the lads (I'm no where near good enough to play on any sort of team, in fact I'm muck!) I've considered returning to do some sort of MA.

When I was younger I did Kenpo, up untill around 13. I was quite good for my age but gradually gave it up mainly because of the teenage years and everything that goes with them and the fact that I was sparring against people of a much greater height/weight. I had a very laid back attitude back then and if I wasn't great at something I'd quit.

Nowadays I feel I'd be much more able for it and would be able to dedicate some time to learn some new skills, handle myself and have a bit of fun aswell. I'm not 100% what I'd be good at and whats nearby, MMA seems pretty practical and looks good and I've forgotten everything to do with Kenpo. I'd probably lean towards a more striking style with some grappling, but I'd probably rule out predominantly wrestling based styles as I would not feel comfortable on the ground at all (Probably why it can be an effective style!)

In regards to MMA, do you have to allready have a basis in some sort of MA or are there classes for people with no experience at all? What kind of fitness level should I be looking to have when starting again?(I'm looking to train with and spar with people around my own age, I'm in my 20's)

Anyways I'm based in Artane and very close to the DART line, so any suggestions of clubs/styles and are much appreciated!

Look forward to hearing from you

My suggestion then is to go along to www.sbgnorthside.com and talk to the lads there.

As regards MMA and your questions. I feel without a doubt that MMA is probably the most effective style you can learn, and in the shortest time.

MMA clubs won't tie you up in rituals, learning Kata's etc.

Of course to become a better MMA fighter you'll want to take up BJJ, Judo or some other grappling style and Thai Boxing, boxing or kickboxing is a huge help too, but you'll learn all that in time.

But your first step is to get along to a good MMA club, and the one I've linked here is operated on a full time basis too.

If your driving I'd also suggest you take a look at Portmarnock Judo Club, although its not your first choice, Portnarnock is a pretty tough session with a brilliant bunch of lads.

MMA will make you competent all round but not brilliant at any specific range! thats where you could specialise if you wanted, boxing, bjj, muathai or judo as mairt suggested-mma is the most complete individual system you could learn so if your choosing 1 do mma, if like some people the grappling does not appeal maybe do muay thai or kickboxing..BJJ Revoulution, formerly sbg northside would be highly reccomended

There is kick boxing in St Pauls in Artane (top of Gracefield Ave) on Saturdays around lunchtime. Don't have anymore details, I'm afraid.

Have a read over the first few pages on this forum, and you find loads of info on mma. Many of the guys here are quality guys and you get a good feel for what they do in their classes.

I know someone mention this before, but maybe if there was a list of especially mma clubs, so people who looking to join or get more info could access. It will save alot of time, for instructors having to write the same thing about where there are located and what they do etc.... As it seems nearly every day, someone is looking for the same info. Just an ideal

There's gonna be a comprehensive list by province on Irishmmaonline.com in the next few weeks, I might even have space for a paragraph on each gym on it. So maybe when that's done people can just link to that.

In the meantime, if you're in Artane your closest club is BJJ Revolution in Baldoyle. www.sbgnorthside.com for details etc.
