MacBook Air?

So Im getting a new laptop and I had the MacBook 15" and was pretty impressed. Only thing that I didnt like was the fact I was running windows XP more than leopard and the whole keyboard translation was different. As you would prolly know.

So anyway, I can get the 1.6 ghz 2gb ram and 80gb hd MacBook air for e1000 brand new which is a pretty good deal for a mac.
Just wondering has anyone here purchased one and what they think of it?

And one thing that worrys me is the cd drive part. I have a pc but its not exactly top notch if you get me. So Im worried about the optical drive reading from another computer and how that works exactly?

imo, macbook air's are only to be bought as a second mac for travelling, if you don't have a primary mac/pc at home i wouldn't bother and just get yourself a macbook/macbook pro.

Well it is for travelling, I have a primary which does the job, but Im thinking I might have to have bluetooth for the mac to pick up the optical drive.

don't think you can use bluetooth to do that. bluetooth's throughput is dire i think wireless is the only option here really.

Optical drive sharing has to be done over wifi.

So long as it has the appropriate software installed.

    kk.

Hmm Im sorta doubting it tbh, I might go for a Macbook pro seeing as for the extra price I would get better specs.

You won't regret it. I got my MBP a month ago and I have to say t is the best laptop I have ever used.

What do you want it to do for you on the move? If it is literally just a bit of a surf now and again, stick with what you have already as the Air is something of a step down in terms of what it can do. It's main pros are it's lean size and looks, after that maybe the solid state HD if the machine is liable to be battered and fecked with would be an attraction though not a sale clincher to the most of us.

May I ask where you are getting an Air at that price?

I agree. Im not 100% gone on the 1.6ghz processor as I will be doing alot of music/video stuff on it eventually.

My brothers best mate is a manager at a store in limerick and gets pretty tasty discounts off.

For music, Mac Book Air will be more than grand unless you are getting into heavy duty multi track work on a regular basis. Video wise, if it's home tinkering around, it will suffice. If it's pro stuff or if you will have a lot of work to do, go for MBP.

Honestly, I'd splash out and get a Macbook or a Macbook Pro. A Macbook is pretty much the same width and height, the Air is just lighter and skinnier. TBH, I think that the Macbook is very portable aswell. I just stick it in my bag for college and it does grand.

I got my macbook Air last week and I love it. I have an ibook G4 too. Tbh, you'd need to get the superdrive with it as its just much handier. I got the 1.8ghz 64gb hd and it runs soo fast, even with loads of apps open. And it does help that its sexy as hell. :)

I loved my MacBook Air and had no real issues with it.
6 weeks ago I took a bad fall and it got dented on the right-hand side, spoiling its looks which are one of its main *raisons d'etre*.
On Friday night, I plugged it in and it fried in my hands. Sparks, smoke, bangs -you name it.
It is now dead. 2 months old.

Is it not covered under the protection plan???

eeep.....sounds like the fall might have done more damage that initially apparent.

    sorry man....that blows.

warranty won't cover accidental damage....its for faulty product, not product that becomes faulty because of accidents etc.

Though i would chance it anyways.........you might get luck and the problem might be totally unrelated to the fall.

SO not what I wanted to read :-) I hope so too but the Air functioned absolutely perfectly for six weeks after the fall. I can't really see the connection especially as the damage was to the lower right hand side of the lid and not to the body area around the charger. Apple are picking it up today, fingers crossed.

Agree that the Air is a fast machine, a lot faster than I expected it to run. I bought the same model 1.8Ghz and 64GB SSD and Im delighted with it.
The only complaint I have are that it gets HOTTTT as hell. Trying to run World of Warcraft is a no go the bottom of the machine gets to hot to actually touch. Using Cisco VPN, Chicken of the VNC and DB Solo on it for any amount of time also seriously heats the machine up.
I wouldnt agree about the superdrive tho, I got one for free from Apple as they messed up processing my order, a month later and I still havent even taken it out of the box.

You could claim on your house insurance if Apple say it is accidental damage. get an estimate for the repair cost from them.

I'm looking forward to getting my paws on my own MBA when I finally move. I'm becoming steadily more and more jealous of my mother:o

    .

RESULT: Brand-new MacBook Air being couriered to me 'anywhere in Ireland', told me to forget about the dent, old one being returned to USA for the engineers to look at.
