I read somewhere in the national newspapers recently (can't remember where, and didn't take much note at the time) that the government is considering legislation to make drinking in the streets an offence to stop teenagers getting plastered and causing trouble. Now. Sounds sensible but---what about the pubs where you have to go out in the street to have a smoke? You will not be able to drink outside or smoke inside. Well done lads. You've got us surrounded:D

Soooo.... drink when you are inside, smoke when you are outside?

  • its always been illegal to drink in the streets...

Designated smoking areas which allow you to bring alcohol outside are usually on private property, and therefore not "in the streets"

Is it not already against the law to drink on the street? I thought it always has been?

Edit, damn you Darrell Zealous Skier

    afaik thats how it goes.

Footpath outside of a pub isn't private property iirc.

    It already is!
We have fantastic legislation in Ireland and more and more is constantly being introduced.
    But it's not enforced.
We don't need all our legislation replaced, just enforce what is there already

Anyway OP, people have common sense. Nobody is going to round up 3 smokers outside a pub with drinks in their hand if they are standing by the doorway.
That's not it's purpose and you know that well, pointless thread tbh!

Judges do have discretion you know

If they honestly cared about preventing teenage drinking they would be checking all the small villiage pubs in the country. I know our old local is swarming with the skanky little twits. (excuse the bitterness) I avoid going to it at all costs as I just feel out of place. (and I'm only 19!!) I knew at least seven of them were under 17 the last time I was there. They're not even that much younger than me but they seemed to drink themselves stupid and try to get off with every male with a pulse!! Ugh... Tools!

Anyway back on topic.. They don't care so that law probably won't happen!

I was already pretty sure street drinking was frowned upon anyway. Dont most towns place notices up that its a public order offense anyway?

    Boys... No... just no!

It's just outside Kilkenny. It's crawling with manky people.. crawling... eww 'tis a pity too coz Kilkenny is such a pretty City. Lets hope the manky maggots just stay on the outskirts! :p (Thank God I don't live there anymore)

Anyway excuse my bitterness... No I will not tell you where it is as I know you two gentlemen have more potential than drinking over priced, watered-down muck and catching syphillis... for free :D

Of course street drinking is illegal...

That would explain why i was fined last year for drinking on College road in Cork. Didnt pay however and got away with it...unlike my friends:D

I'm going to Kilkenny for the Cats Laughs at the end of the month, by any chance could you recommend a pub or bar just outside the city where a gentleman of leisure could find some over priced, watered-down muck? That's the way I like my beer, but i's so hard to find somewhere that gets it just right :D

i am still shocked by US 21yrs old legal to drink rule:pac:

What would that do to Micky McDowalls "cafe bar" plan. Aren't there many pubs that have seats outside the front on the pavement, or am i thinking of somewhere on the continent?

Nah, best bet for you would be staying in the actual City. You'll have a ball and you can be garuanteed over-priced, water-down muck will be served everywhere during the Cats Laughs. Have fun :)

*and avoid wandering to the outskirts...

Young people shouldn't be drinking, we need them to be as fit as possible to fight the British!

Wait, what do you mean it's over? Over 80 years, the feck are you on? Pfft, time sure does fly. Next you'll be telling me there was another World War!

Don't most teenagers drink in parks, fields, railway tracks etc etc and not in full view on the streets so they don't get caught? Anyway doesn't this legislation already exist?

Actually it's kinda funny but if a 'city' has a cathedral then its a city. Kilkenny has two cathedrals, I think.

No that's not how we define a city in Ireland it's defined by the local government act of 2001 schedule 5 (http://www.irishstatutebook.ie/2001/en/act/pub/0037/sched5.html#sched5) which states that Cork, Limerick, Dublin, Waterford and Galway are cities but article 10 paragraph 7 of the same act (http://www.irishstatutebook.ie/2001/en/act/pub/0037/sec0010.html#partii-sec10) says "continued use of the description city in relation to Kilkenny, to the extent that that description was used before the establishment day and is not otherwise inconsistent with this Act"

Cathedrals and charters do not come into it, we are not in the UK.

But as stated by Dementor Dublin is the only real city the rest are just large towns in my opinion.

Possibly you missed the tone of my post, which was offered for amusement rather than a rant, as suggested by the icon I finished it with. Could I suggest you try lightening up a little? However, I do agree entirely with you about enforcing existing legislation rather than introducing new, although that was not my purpose.
