How much right does a house alarm fitter have to the "engineer code" associated with the alarm being fitted.

Is s/he perfectly within their rights to refuse to give you the code used?

There are a few threads about this in the home and garden forums. It seems it's fairly common for them to refuse to give it out. In the wrong hands, it makes having an alarm pretty worthless.

Alarm companies are not obliged to give you the engineer code. They should offer to call out and change the code, but you will probably be charged for this. The reason for not giving you the code is that this code allows entry to the system programming menu's in any installation which has been carried out by that company.

What's the name of the company? I have a code or two.............:D What's the make and model of your control panel, sometimes they can still have the factory code programmed into them. I'm sure I could point you in the right direction.

Thanks derek_g34. It is a neighbour friend who has the issue. He's now away on a few weeks vacation, so I'll check back in with him to see if your suggestion is an avenue he wants to follow up on. Thanks again.
