Hmm are you on windows or linux? If you are on windows you might be ok to go ahead with the install of the various components and with the help of some tools you can create the database and everything else.

It can be a bit tricky. Can you check if you have PHP and MySQL on your website? Do you host the website or does another company host it? If it's another company check with them to see if you can use PHP and MySQL. You need to make sure that all of this is in place first.

Next download Moodle. The best thing to do is copy the file to your website and unzip it. If you can't unzip it on the website, unzip it on a local machine and FTP the folder and all of the files to a location on the website.
Now open a browser and go to http://<yourwebsite>/<moodle location>/install.php and run it. Moodle will check if you have all the correct settings. If not this is where it can be tricky but hopefully everything will be OK. Don't forget to make a note of any passwords.
Once it completes it will tell you to delete the installation folder, which you should do and you can login by going to http://<yourwebsite>/<moodle location>.

Best of luck and feel free to ask questions.

Another company hosts the site. Your instructions sound doable - I had begun ftping all of the moodle files onto the server but stopped as I realised I didn't really know what I was doing - thanks again for the feedback

Most hosting companies these days offer PHP and MySQL but you will need to know some basic MySQL details such as usernames, password and address/location of the MySQL server. The Moodle install will tell you if you have appropriate versions of everything.
