    Isnt there an online directory?

Not like that. There's a directory where you can ring up and ask for xyzs phone number, but that's only if they're in the directory.

He probably rang O2 care, gave the number and they said "Hello, Mr joflor" and then he knew. That or what Vimes said.

they wouldnt do that unless he entered the pin/correct dob to validate the details and even then ask who it is they're speaking to, we'd get a bollicking for using someones name from the getgo without them saying it first

i remember once i had a guy who asked if we could erase all his call details off the network as he was sending his ex hundreds of threatening messages a week and she was taking legal procedings against him, when he asked for advice as to what he could do i just said maybe he should stop sending her threatening texts, he didnt take it too kindly :D

They shouldn't do it but they do. I've experience it with all the networks.

O2 told me my PIN once when I told them I couldn't remember it.

All the networks do it. Unfortunitly all staff aren't trained sufficiently or just don't really care.

It seems to be standard Vodafone policy on prepay to address you with "Hello Mr Smith" when you call them.

vodafone used to do that all the f*cking time. even if i called from a landline and just typed my number in, they'd answer with "hello mr vimes"*. every time they did it, i asked them not to do it again but they did every time. even when i called from my number that was previously vodafone but had been ported to meteor they'd get the old records and call out my name
