How can you tell how many actuations have been used by your camera. I have a canon 5D.

You can try Opanda's IExif , which will let you view the EXIF data of your images. Load your last taken image in the software and scroll through the huge amount of data and in amongst all of that you should see your "Shutter Releases" value.

Oh and if you're using a Mac, try ExifTool. Not as pretty an interface as Opanda, but just as functional.

You can't on a 5D I'm afraid.

The file numbering system increments from the last number so if you change CF cards to one with a higher number then your numbering scheme is goosed. And it also resets at 10,000 anyway.

The CanCount works great on the 1D series but I'm not sure if it supports the 5D.

If you bring it to a Canon service centre they can let you know via their diagnostic software. They may charge you though.

It's rated at 100,000. But to be honest, it might go at 200,000 or 200. You just don't know. Not sure on the cost of replacing the shutter assembly but I doubt it's cheap

As far as I know only the 1 series have the ability to report back the actuation count via the software that Paulw mentioned above. For all the rest you have to ship it back. It's a bummer!

You could always count how many files you have though. A quick look at Lightroom shows me that I have just under 4000 files with a 5D. Although two of those were taken with Fajitas! camera.

Nope, Canon don't write this info to the exif.

Cacount works only for 1D cameras up to Mark II, on Mark III its useless as well.

here link somebody is saying a Nikon D80 has gone 800k actuations and another 1.2m actuations

I've been told Nikon Dxx's are rated at at least 50k (D70, D50 and D80 may be rated 100k)
Dxxx's are rated at 250k and I assume Dx's will be much more than that

I don't think the Dxx (Nikon) are officially rated. But there are people who say that their cameras are still alive at 50,000+

Of course there are a similarly people saying that theirs died after 17,000...

I've tried it on the 5D files, only works with JPEG's though, not raws or TIFF's. It doesn't really display that much info at all and it certainly doesn't display shutter count.

I use exiftool from the command line and it returns pretty much the same amount of info, bar the hex code. Still absolutely no use for a 5D though, the info isn't there to begin with.
