Hello all. Just got my 450d a few days ago, still reading through the manual. Would like to take a few shots at gig this weekend. But im really lost on the overall settings for this. I have the kit lense and 50mm f1.8. The lighting would be more like a club scene.

if the lights are good, what I do is ISO 1600, 50mm f/1.8, and shoot at 1/90s and base your shots from those settings and lighting. Don't drop the shutter speed much lower than that. Depends where you're shooting really... if it's Fibbers you won't be able to shoot, if it's the music centre then you'll get some good shots.

The kit lens is too slow for anything but the brightest stage lights.

I have 400d so assuming it is similar. I think what they are saying is that you have you camera set to aperture priority Av setting.

you have the iso up to as high as possible aperture set low means that there is as much light as possible getting into the camera

if you depress the shutter release the shutter speed should appear on the screen if it is greater than 1/90 of a second the pictures might be blurred (eg 1/80 is greater than 1/90 and 1/100 is smaller than 1/90)

if the pictures are still dark with all that take the images in raw and you might regain some detail afterwards.

I tried gig photography once and I thought it was great fun you get so into taking the shots. its a good buzz.

plan to do it again with a film camera and some high iso film.

I got away with iso set to 400 last night, had my 450D set to P (shutter speed and Aperture sets automatically)
    Used 50mm1.4.

What setting do you normally set the white balance at for gigs? Auto WB? Also on the metering mode? Thanks in advance.

Auto for both, I should add that I used the flash, type of gigs I go too are Punk and you can do what you want basically.

I was also close up to the band.
