Help required for Behringer Podcast studio

    Hi there.

I'm a newbie with a question! (I've rooted around here for a while, and I know this should normally be placed in the "radio" forum, but some folk there seem to be a little preoccupied with radio personalities, and the medium of radio itself is kinda ignored, so with this being a more technical request, I figured I might have more chance of assistance here...)

And before we start, I'd just like to point out that at the moment, my technical expertise is hovering somewhere around zero, so if anyone is kind enough to respond, please bear this in mind. :)

I bought the aforementioned piece of kit to record radio DJ demos, with the idea being that I would record a series of live shows for practice purposes, and edit down a demo for submission purposes.

My idea of live shows included me yapping , doing the whole dj thing, and introducing songs as per a live radio show, however, Im having some setup troubles.

The mic set-up is very simple and impossible to get wrong, but my problems stem from the fact that I want to play music as well as talk.

The music is coming into the Podcastudio from an external laptop, which I had linked to the PS box via the "line in" input (See attached pic#2). This works just fine audio wise (it comes bundled with Audacity) but unfortunately the mic remains live throughout, with seemingly no way to power it off or turn it down while the track is playing. This makes me think Im doing summat very wrong.

I know I can record my links with the podcastudio and insert the mp3 tracks in audacity after the fact, but the whole point in buying it in the first place was that I really wanted to get a feel for on the spot broadcasting.

I've read the stickies above, and they were very helpful and informative on many topics, and I will certainly re-reference them in the future, but unfortunately none really touched on my current problem, so if anyone can decipher my gibberish and offer any suggestions as to an alternative method of connection or what I may be doing wrong, I'd really appreciate it.

(The pics attached, or this link may ring some bells)

    Thanks in advance,

    Mark.

hmmm what kind of dj setup are you using? you might be best off just plugging a mic into your mixer and recording the whole lot into audacity / podcaststudio or whatever...

surely you can turn down the level of the mic on one of the input volume controls? also it may be easier just to use a cd player as the music source.

    Howdy.

    Thanks for the responses.

The set up is the Behringer podcastudio. The pics in the first post show you what I'm using, the main part being the the xeynx502 mixer. Buggered if I know what Im doing, mind.

That's the problem. If I do turn the level down, it turns down both the microphone and the music....I believe I need an alternative method of connecting whatever music source im planning on using.

I am currently using a laptop to supply the music to the mixer, using the audio (headphone) jack connected to the mixer's line in input. As a novice, if I were to use a cd player instead of a laptop, I'd still be feeding it into the "line in" input on the actual mixer, which is where I think I'm going wrong....

if anyone wants to take a closer look at the mixer unit, theres an "up close & personal" photo on this page

is audacity taking the input as one track, or two? I had a similar problem with a Line 6 tonebox, I could seperate them out on the box, but both feeds were being fed to the laptop as one. I managed to get the problem sorted, but it involved using a mac..but I think for the laptop, have a look at your input drivers for the software, and make sure that you are using the podcast studio input drivers and not the normal audio in.

I seem to remember this question appearing before - as I recall the open mic thing is an anomaly of the unit.

I could be totally wrong on this, though.

One suggestion might be record the music onto 1 pair of tracks and the DJ onto 1 other one and edit silence into the vocal tarck after .... getting a bit techy there though.

The xenyx is not really perfect for what you're trying to do.

Loads of xenyx have been dumped in Ireland (Ireland is a dumping site for overpriced dodgy equipment)

What would be absolutely perfect for you is a small phonics helix,,, buy it on the internet...... shops here don't sell them unless you ask them to order because they can't make as much money as from the the other crap they sell.

But working within your limitations is where you really learn. Work the xenyx til it screams --- just learn to pop the mic switch --- you can edit out the click sound later

But if you want to get something that sounds really impressive. And what you should do,, if you want to make a demo.

play your music (so you can hear it) with yourself talking separately recorded. Then in Audacity you recombine your voice clips with the audio. So it sounds spontaneous. You edit out all the flubs

I don't really listen to the radio much anymore. But many shows that you hear have been constructed from scripted audio. You're listening to constructed sound files.

Some radio producers go through audio recordings and remove all the breathing sounds. I think it sounds weird. But most radio you hear has been throughly scrubbed. The spontaneous banter has been studiously recorded earlier in the day or week for 'live' shows.

But the most important thing is have fun. Record radio shows to play for your friends ... it will be really embarassing at first... but then they'll ask you to do more.

Most importantly do something worth listening to

So, 2fivers! Where can we hear your completed Podcasts?

So, 2fivers! Where can we hear your completed Podcasts?

I'm afraid you can't Enda. My recordings were only intended for distribution to people of importance in the radio industry.

Incidentally, They have achieved their purpose (with a considerable amount of help from the decent people who assisted me here), and so, employment wise, I have no further need to record demos. Thanks for your interest nonetheless.

All pretence aside, I can only assume that you're still bitter about many things, but primarily your receiving an infraction for your rude behaviour yesterday, and, as you clearly blame me for the consequences of your own ill-considered comments, you have resorted to trolling my posts (from seven months ago!) in an attempt to embarrass or annoy me into further confrontation.

It hasn't worked, and I'll leave it to the moderators to decide whether any further action should be taken.

I sincerely hope whatever issues you have are resolved soon.

I would ask very kindly that you please point out what have I ever done on you personally to warrant this attitude?

I have no bitterness re; any infraction and have no problem if banned off boards.ie for eternity(however, I find that the moderators are fair and balanced enough here by comparison to other Irish so called radio and other subject discussion boards) although it would be nice to have some freedom of speech re: in a country that my Grandfather fought for the freedom of in both 1916 and 1921. For me ultimately, I would be most interested to find out what your beef is with me personally?
