Howdy, i got a Washburn X50 profe online a while ago.

I have a bit of fret buzz on the low E string at the 3rd fret, i'm afraid to go fiddling with the guitar because i dont want to f**k it up. Is there a handy way to sort this out? I have zero technical capabilities.

When you get fret buzz so high up that end of the neck, it's usually that the nut is too low or the fret is too high. Neither has a 'handy' fix. Nothing major, but you'd likely want a luthier to do it. $$

You could raise the action, but because the bridge is at the other end, you'd need to go waay up to have any effect on the 3rd fret. You could give the truss rod a little tweak (loosen it) and it might have a slight improvement. The 3rd fret is a little outside the sweet spot where the truss rod would sort it perfectly, but this is the first step i'd take myself. See if it helps.

Apart from that, higher guage strings will help as they have more tension and flop around less. It doesnt even have to be higher across the board, you can get sets that have a 'heavy bottom'. :pac:

Check if the neck is warped by looking down along it, and carefully adjust the truss rod if needed.
Check the action and make sure it is correct. (not sure of the dimensions)
The saddle may need to be raised a little.

Also very new strings can be more buzzy than old ones...........

might be the cheap strings if you bought it online, but my first thought was a twisted neck ,seen it before a few times

Voodoo is closer to being correct as always! :)

If you are not confident fiddling with it, especially the truss rod, get a pro to look at it for you. Not just some long haired guy in the local music shop, somebody who knows what they are at! ;)

Is it just the third fret that it buzzes at? Could be a raised fret at the 4th.

Sounds like a high fourth rather than a low nut.

No! Bring it to a luthier to get it sorted.

I had exactly the same problem with my les paul. There was a buzzing at the third fret on the E string only. Turns out like feylya said the 4th fret itself was slightly raised, you can actually fit your fingernail into the gap between the fret and the fretboard. I brought it back to the shop and they filed it down - bad idea, it still buzzes now and it annoys the hell out of me. A luthier sounds like a good option, I may check that out myself.
