Well lads, just looking for a bit of advice. I have a PPL, and I have been studying for ATPLs in my spare time, with a view to doing the exams next year, bit I think I might postpone it. Anyway, I am also doing a BBS in Accounting and Finance in University of Limerick, and we go on co-operative education in our third year. It has come to the time when we have to start looking for placements if you are organising your own. I want to organise my own placement because I really want to spend time working an a place that interests me, and somewhere I would like to work in the future (might be asking a bit much but anyway ). I am stuck between deciding if I should get a CPL or go into the business side of aviation (I have a great passion for both), but either way thats nothing to worry about yet, and I will be finishing my degree regardless.

I would appreciate any advice anyone could offer me on what kind of placements I could look for within the aviation industry. Thanks in advance.

Are these placements generally in Ireland, the UK or abroad?

I would like to stay in Ireland if possible. Dublin or Shannon being ideal. I was thinking of applying to the DAA, or possibly EI but not sure what kind of people they would be looking for. I know the DAA offer a graduate programme for business/finance students, so I am definatly going to look into that.

The unfortunate thing about aviation in Ireland is the relative smallness. Plus the lack of obvious career paths. A lot of appointments are internal and go to people who started with the company at entry level. Plus the usual it's not what you know, it's who you know situation.

The only thing to do is to start somewhere with a view to moving on. Once in you can make contacts and eventually you will be asked to apply for a job. Keep up the flying in the meantime and eventually you will be presented with a choice. Become a pilot or carry on with the other career.

Sometimes even though I love being a pilot. I wonder if I made the right decision,
