VRT rates increased?

Has anyone else noticed this. I recently acquired a 1999 Ford Focus 1.6LX over here in London with an eye to taking it back home with me when I come home. I was willing to take the hit on the VRT so just before I went out and brought it I checked the VRT on it, which was €847.

That's fair enough, I can afford it. I'm not happy at the fact that the government u-turned on the decision to tax pre 2008 imports on C02 emissions as opposed to engine size. Good thing I didn't buy a 2ltr diesel then.

Now I go to check the VRT rates for my car and they have shot up by more than €200 to €1078. Anyone know what's going on here ? Are they still implementing a new system and having teething problems a week on. Surely if that's the case then they could test it properly before putting it live.

I'm just an ordinary punter who works hard and wants to bring his car home without having to dish out all his money to do so. It's not like I'm importing a helicopter or a Ferrari.

I'm quite annoyed at this situation so just a heads up to anyone thinking of bringing in a car from England. Check before you buy!

One other question, can the VRT rates shown on websites be taken as gospel, or are they just guide prices ?

There's a current thread about apparent glitches on the VRT calculator. Might find it relevant.

    Indeed

    Edit:

The VRT enquiry site is all over the shop as they seem to be testing the dual CO2 / cc based system of taxing. This has been stated many times in many posts over the last few days

here's the thread esel planned to point to

And to answer another general question: on line quotes are NEVER official and / or final. The VRO determines the VRT due when you offer the car for inspection
