i have a laptop with preinstalled ram of 1gb
i want to add a 2gb of ram to the second slot

    can i do this?
will i get performance of 3gb ram?

on the HP site, i found below message
If you mix memory speeds, the system will perform at the lower memory speed.

    is this correct?

    also it says -
Above 3 GB, all memory may not be available due to system resource requirements.
    is this right?

You can do it but you may not get 3GBs. Chances are your laptop has 2 512MB DIMMs in it (Most manufacturers would install memory in pairs for performance gains). If you remove one and put in a 2GB DIMM then you'll have 2.5GBs.

Yep. If you have one DIMM running at 533Mhz and one running at 667Mhz then they will both run at 533Mhz.

Yep. This is down to windows. A 32 bit operating system only has 4GBs available for memory addressing. Unfortunately this is for everything in the system (graphics cards and the like) and not just the ram. You should get around 3.25GBs or so when using a 32 bit operating system.

get cpuz and see what it IDs the current ram as

or open up the laptop and see what is written on the simm , you are going to have to open it up anyway to add the new ram

another reason why manufacturers install memory in pairs is because two are usually cheaper than one twice the size
