Flickr copyright vs Viewing large

How do people feel about this ? I think by setting a download restriction on your images you restrict viewers from displaying the photo at different resolutions.
Some photos are just not clear enough at the default flickr 400-500px,
while this was okay when i was shooting film, with digital i think its vital people see the pixel point quality. Saying that theres a select few images i would rather people did not save. I dont think there is an option to let users view large images and not be able to save [spaceball.gif],
any thoughts? Do you guys have this copyright restriction feature on, on flickr?

All my images are copyright, and only friends/contacts can see large size. Those who are listed as friend/contact are mostly those I have met in person, or contacts I would know from online fora.

I certainly wouldn't allow a stranger have full access to my images.

Any technical prevention measure can and will be circumvented in time, given sufficient interest. If you have an image that you simply, absolutely do not want people to take, do not upload it.

Right now Flickr saves the original sized image under a different URL than the other sizes, to prevent people taking them. This has probably been broken already somewhere, as I'm sure it's a set formula that generates the URL.

Anyones a contact these days - for me anyway
As for not uploading, id like people to see it but larger than the default flickr preview size, i guess that cant be changed, unless i change the page format.

I only allow friends to view large, but as already mentioned if you don't want people copying work on-line then don#'t put it on-line

Well, as an example of just how difficult it IS to do this sort of thing with a site like flickr, and still allow people to link, blog, etc etc,

    http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3200/2453369872_e13e719657_b.jpg

There's the URL to the large version of the last photo you uploaded to your stream (which I can get despite the fact that I'm not a contact of yours) . Flickr doesn't do a great job of protecting these. Luckily the original versions now use a different checksum (that e13e719657 bit) than all the other sized versions so I can't think of a way off the top of my head to access them. This usen't to be the case though, they used to be as easy to get as the other sizes. So essentially as Cabaal says, if you don't want people copying them, just don't put them up !

Hey Daire, yeah ive tried that, however i think some people resize their photo to the dimensions flickr shows , that way _b , _o remain the same or non existent.

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/orgasmatron/2422359549/

this for example, nice photo but it would look much better bigger. And i tried have a look for a larger size but i think hes only uploaded that dimension

I might just leave my contacts to be able to view large.

Yeah, some people just upload fairly small res ones in the first place. If there was a considerably larger original size however then sticking _o always used to be able to get it. Thats what I was going to do above, before realising that they've changed the hash for the original size only (all the others are the same). So it's sort of security by obscurity, which is no real security at all, but still better than nothing ...

True, however it definitely stops the end users.

If you want to download a photo from Flickr it can be very easy to get the high res image even with the spaceball.gif and all of that stuff.

I leave all my images at a maz of 1441 wide
