My friend, who is meteor ready to go (credit), says if you know somebody who has a bill-paying phone you can get them to buy a bill-paying phone for much much cheaper, 200 or 300 cheaper, in some cases, and then they can just give it to you, u can get it unlocked, and then you have an expensiev phone for very cheap.

he says he has done this. Is this true and can i do it?

Yes, but the bill payer would have to renew their contract for another 12 months so they're locked in and they just gave away their subsidised phone.

Good luck trying to find someone to do that for you!

So, the person who gives in the phone is stuck with his/her service provider for another year? That's not too bad! What do you mean by subsidised phone?

Quite a few business men do it - they have the veteran Nokia 6310i with matching carkits installed in their Mercs and they're damned if they'll be taking them out and good luck to anyone trying to persuade them to switch handsets.

Normally I recommend getting partner/son/daughter/favourite clumsy brother/sister a nice present of a new phone and give them a list of websites where they can order refurbished 6310i's from.

One of the benefits of billpay is you have more choice of newer and advanced phones. And as you pointed out in the first post, they are often far cheaper to buy than a RTG phone. Obvious reason is the companies subsidise billpay customers more.
So yes, if your mother will sign up for another year and has no need for a fancy new phone then go for it.
I don't know much about unlocking phones, somebody else can post about that

Excellent point neilled. My dad is like that. He has a Nokia 6310i, it works great, does what he wants and he has no need for fancy cameras, mp3 or other features. It does what it is designed for so well, it's realy popular among older people and business men especially.

It's a shame no manufacturer has taken the mantel and made anything similiar to the 6310, the nearest I can think off would be the E65, but I'd hate to see that in five or six years time.

I am generally a Sony Ericsson user (Ericsson before that) but Nokia produced a classic with the 6310i. Simple to use, easy to read display, long battery life. E65 has no comparison, small fiddly buttons, relatively complicated menus and so so battery.

so so is being kind. With heavy use my e65 won't last past 2pm. I've had to get a second battery and carry it around with me
