I have a '98 A6 (118k) and a strange thing happened today that's never happened (in this or any of my previous cars) before.

I started her up this morning and she fired but immediately conked. I repeated and it conked again. I took out the key and gave it another go and it ran. It did the same thing again this evening after work.

Any ideas? I have R/C/L, btw.

Definitely sounds like an immobiliser problem.

The first thing to do is try the spare key, if you have on. If all is well with the spare key then you will simply need the other key reprogrammed/replace. If using the spare key gives the same symptoms then you will the fault memory read to determine the location of the fault.
