sponsor a child charities: any recommendations?

I was listening to the radio a while ago and someone mentioned that 'sponsor a child' charities are a more efficient way to give since less is spent in administration. I was looking around and a big one is Road, who do schemes in Africa, South America and Asia for $22. It seems like this is more of a social payment, if you will, than some of the others that ask for less money and only provide for clean water and basics like that.

Has anyone done one of these schemes and do they have any reccomendations?

I used to give Gorta few bob every week. Not necessarily a kids only charity but I used to get regular updates about where my money went

I did one a few years ago. It was to sponsor a childs education in Africa. It was $75 but it was not ran too well.

I too would be interested in any other recomendations if anyone knows any good ones. Especially in the area of education.

For just €2 a day you can help sponsor a child become someone's special friend.

The administration still saps a lot of money. If you're serious, you should go for more a hands-on approach:

I wouldn't touch it with a forty foot pole.

One you are in you never never get off the hook.

By all means do it privately but these fcukers never let go.

I was surprised to find them real myself.

Thought it was a South Park parody.
