Ha :p after a bit of browsing it definitely divides people. I like some of the results... I can see how serious photographers would have some difficulties with it though... and I can see how some would love it. Interesting, to say the least.

    I don't get it?

What's the appeal? Is it supposed to be kitch or ironic or something, taking photos with toy cameras?

Is it that it's hard to get a good photo with them? Is it funny? Is it serious? Can't you get the same effects in pp?

Why these ones and not disposable cameras?

Please explain it for me someone!?

Sorry for dragging up an old post, but I'm interested in getting some lomo cameras myself, namely a Holga.

Week Old Pencil, I note you say you're in Cork, do you develop your own film, or if not, can you recommend places that would develop film well for me? I'm new to the area in general, and want to be sure I can get the film developed before I invest in a new camera! :D

    Many thanks.

If you're buying a Holga, buy one of eBay - not any of the proper sites (Pleaaaaaaase!!!)

    It'll cost you 20 quid, istead of 70 :)

There's a few places in Cork that dev 120 film iirc. I can't remember the name of the one I'm thinking of though. If all goes to all though, you can still put some 35mm film through!

if it's c-41 Macsweeny's or O'Leary's, both on Oliver Plunkett st will do it.

I shall look into ebay. I must admit, I was tempted by all the shiny shiny accessories, I'm like a little magpie!

I'm interested in shooting on 120mm, specifically the older film. I love my parents old photo albums, the soft pinky photos, and want to re-create some of these myself!

*scuttles over to ebay to "research"*

    These guys!

If they can't dev it, they'll give you what you need to do so!!! :)

also go into your local camera shop and see if you can get expired film... i use film form 1974 in my holga.. it can give you some crazy results. and the film should be free!

First question, Bw or colour film? I don't suppose you're going to shoot slides with holga... it is possible, but very hardcore :)
I do my own bw film, and going to my own colour negs, too.

I think O'Leary's camera world in cork do most kinds of film, although i have bad experience with them - they lost one of my rolls, and last time i was there i heard from one of the staff that kodak stopped manufacturing developing chemicals... yeah, right...

I guess mostly colour film, and you're right, not slide, I'm not hardcore enough for that yet! :D I'd love to dev myself, but, I've never done it, and have nowhere here that I could possibly set up a dark room.

O'Leary's, name rings a bell, I'm sure I've been in there lots, drooling over cameras. I shall have a chat with them next time I'm in there spending imaginary euros!

I love the sound of free film too, thanks for all the tips.

It seems that the big problem with Lomography is the name, no?

Is the effect easily achieved with other cameras? I really like the tone of the shots it produces but like a few of you, don't really agree with buying into a brandname

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,624 ✭✭✭✭Fajitas!

Well, it's the fact that the Lomography company just charge so so much more for a product than they should. The camera's are bad quality - 20 quid is a reasonable price, not 70!!!

Now, I do have some of the Lomo cameras, and had fun with them, but all have broken except the Holga.. Build quality is terrible in the Lomo range - and the company see that as a design feature.

rescanning as we speak, very pleased with results...considering its my first attempt
    (in other words they're sh1t but i like them cos they're different:D)

lomography yeah its supposed to be for professional photographers that are sooo tired of shooting pictures of super models they just want to kick back and let fly< / sarcastic> tone

lomography are also selling other cameras like yashica gsn for like a $120 I got mine from the states for half that inc postage now they guarantee they work so maybe they are not making a 100% markup on each camera but i doubt it.

it is supposed to be a random thing you might get a really atmospheric image that looks old but most of the shots you take will look carp

its meant to be cheap and cheerful but its not any more

One of my cameras costs over 200 quid on their site.

I got it for 15, with a flash thrown in :)
