How to get started?

I've been convinced for a good while now that I want to write a book. So far so original... However, every time I sit down to start I take fright. This has been going on for almost a year now.. the story is in my head but I need some sort of deadline or other motivation to get it out of there and onto paper.

While I am sure this is not unusual, I'm hoping that someone out there had a similar hesitant start that they managed to overcome, and will share tips and hints.

    Anone?

I know it sounds obvious, but in the end the only way you're going to be a writer is to just get on and write.

Most writers will tell you they work best by being disciplined about it. Treat it like a job. Set yourself a regular time during each day when you write. Don't worry whether it's only one hour a day, or a full time job at the other extreme. The main thing is, during that time, writing is what you do. Sit down at your desk, fire up your word processor (or open your notebook, or whatever) and for that time, write down words. As you get used to the regular work, your stories will grow and so will your confidence.

There's no magic answer... you've just got to do it.
