Engagement Ring Valuations

Ok I know this topic has come up before in terms of Jewellers upping the value of a ring etc. But as a newly engaged couple we went about getting the engagement ring valued for insurance and to be honest the pricing structure on getting this done made us slightly worried.

So the question is as follows.

Is it normal for a jeweller to apply a % of the value they give as a charge on top of base charge for doing a valuation?

It makes us wonder that if they will "bump" up the value as we saw dicussed in a previous thread that this in turn "bumps" up the money they will get for doing the valuation? Now we know this might make us sound like Mr and soon to be Mrs scrouge and everything but it just seems a bit over the top to us.

We tried Fallers (who came back with a % charge) and Hartmanns (who it turns out dont do valuations). Does any one have a good jewellers in Galway they can recommend for getting a valuation done?

ernest jones do a flat fee, but then again, they gave what appeared to be a ridiculous valuation, which is going to give me a headache with my insurers

The jeweller you purchased off should provide you with an insurance valuation without any hassle.

Generally if it's under €2k you may not need paperwork for your insurance company, but this varies from policy to policy.

All else failing, the receipt from the shop you bought in should cover you for insurance.

WRT insurance, if you don't have your own house policy, FBD do a policy for just the piece of jewellery. 091-778070. AFAIK, they are the only ones who offer this.

If you are adding the ring to a house policy, discuss putting your ring on "all risks" this covers you if you're out for a night, wheras just listed on your contents may only cover you if something happens to the ring at home. Again, this all varies from policy to policy, so discuss with your broker/insurance company.

There is one is the Hibernian Mall in Dublin that does the valuation there and then, but you need to make an appointment. the website is www.irishjewel.com or .ie

Meant to say its a flat fee

I tried FBD as well and was told they don't to this kind of insurance.

I've just spoken to FBDs Galway office, and they assure me that this policy is still available. The problem may be that they now have a central support service, so it may be a policy or phraseology that they aren't familiar with!

When you call up, ask for an "All Risks" policy. If you still have problems, ask to speak to someone in their Galway office. The number I use is 091-778070.

The "All Risks" policy is for valuables to be covered on their own.

There is a jeweller in Royal Hibernian Way, Dublin that does valuation of rings for a fixed flat fee €150 - not a % which seems to be a bit of a money making machine to me!
I just got my engagement ring valued there and found them very helpful.
Ph: 01-6777161 but you must make an appointment and they do it there and then for you and post out the valuation to you.
Most Irish jewellers don't want to touch USA/foreign bought rings to do valuations, I'm not sure why... I guess it's taking business away from them.
Also we insured the ring with Alliance but with our house insurance - if the ring is valued over €9000.00 most insurance companies insist on having a safe in the house.

Try ESL Jewellers upstairs in the Powerscourt Centre off Grafton St. They can do it same day and were only 50 yoyos , albeit 2 years ago.

I went to ESL in Powerscourt Townhouse, but thye couldnt value my ring because I did not have a "cert". I never heard of a jeweller who is supposed to be a valuer not being able to value a ring without a cert!!I thought the whole purpose of getting it valued was for the jeweller to be able to tell one all the information about the ring. They told me they charge E75 for a valuation wiht a cert, seems to me they charge e75 just to write down what is on the cert. They also told me hat they were not gemologists so they didnt know if my ring was tanzanite or not ! I wouldnt
recommend them for a valuation. I had to go to another jeweller instead who was able to tell me all about my rings and tested and valued them too.
