Selling valuable items on ebay

Hi just wondering if anyone has any advice for posting valuable items to be sold on ebay. I sold a laptop on ebay about two years ago to a buyer in Denmark - it went by registered post as I thought this method was pretty much 100% secure. After posting, it went 'missing' in a mail sorting centre in the UK. An post would only pay out 150 euro as they don't offer insurance over this amount posting abroad. Have I been extremely unlucky or has this happened to other people selling on ebay?

For selling expensive items, and particularly computers/laptops, you should use a courier service that offers full insurance and a guaranteed delivery time. UPS/FedEx/DHL etc will insure your item for the full amount. It will cost more, but this is something the buyer will have to fork out for if he wants it.

Apart from that, I'd restrict the locations you'll sell to, maybe UK & Ireland only, as sending further will be expensive, and might increase the risk of loss.

Thanks good advice jor el. I note that Ebay/paypal do not offer seller protection in Ireland, so this is also something to be wary of.

You have to wonder where these items end up. How does a laptop simply go missing? Who ends up with it?
