Now I'm back in the money I feel its time to add to the family. I have €1250 give or take to spend on a guitar but everything I want seems to be over 3K lol... I'm prolly gonna end up with a random les paul so I thought I'd ask here first to see if theres anything else I should be looking at.

I play anything from the 60's, love blues and say muse placebo radiohead qotsa stuff like that.

Is there anywhere that sells rickenbackers or gretsch in town? I'd prolly stretch my budget if i found one, so many guitars, so little time :( Need suggestions before I go mad!

G&L, Bacchaus, and Edwards would be the brands I'd go looking at hot foot with that kind of dough.

If you're after a Les Paul, you'll get a very nice Edwards or Bacchus LP for well under your budget (ordering from Japan). Most non Gibson-fanboys agree that the quality and consistency of guitars like these equals or exceeds what Gibson is churning out these days.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,848 ✭✭✭✭Doctor J

As above, all I'd add is to be open to non-Gibson or Fender instruments (not that there's anything wrong with them as such, just that there are some amzing instruments out there) and don't buy it in Ireland. Your budget brings you into the realm of top drawer instruments, as well as the aforementioned Bacchus, G&L etc you could pick up a second hand PRS or Eggle, have a look at Navigator too.

What I'd suggest before all of this is to decide on the type of guitar you want first. There's a world of difference between a strat design and a les paul design and a gretch and a Ric. Get into the shops and play everything you can. See what kind of pickup configuration works best for you, find out what body design suits you best, work out what you're really looking for in a guitar and then find out who makes something in line with that.

Either way you should have a truly superb instrument in your hands for that money :)

Looking at guitarjapan.com I'm blown away, some of those Bacchus guitars are beautiful, might have to get 2

Yeah, when you see the prices of them and then compare the price of a big G in town it's hard not to get a little excited :pac:

Only reason I'd go to town is to try a guitar out then buy online instead of a shot in the dark, I'm guessing nowhere in dublin stock bacchus?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,848 ✭✭✭✭Doctor J

Nowhere in Europe, nor the Americas. There's a shop in Australia who sell them, they're the only ones outside Japan that I'm aware of. That guitarjapan place is about as cheap as I've seen, especially with the current US$ exchange rate.

    I have seen the light......
A second hand PRS from the UK for that dough. CE22 or 24 models. Singlecut models too....not to mention the McCarty PRS. All with coil tap pickups too.

Once you go Paul Reed Smith, you never go back......

Anyone who knocks an American made PRS on boards.ie should cancel their membership, retire from the guitar and be sentenced to dance music forever.....

They are called the best for a reason.........

sorry darren i have never picked up,or even seen a PRS that appealed to me
granted i've only held one or two in london but they were "fancy ones"
just felt they were very bland

anyways if i was looking for a guitar to cover the style of stuff you mentioned in the OP i'd be looking at the likes of this...
    bbf4_1.JPG
Eastpointe Reverend's are starting to creep up in value,a few have gone for silly money and the fact that the U.S models are discontinued with only a couple of thousand made,it's a safe buy
they're so nice i'm waiting on my second to be delivered :D

I played a proper PRS last weekend for quite a while. While it was a nice instrument, my Fujigen strat was just nicer and I consider my strat to be the worst of my good instruments.

Just looking at Prestige S-Series. Hmmm, feck. Want!

You know, I like PRS. I've played a few over the years, and think they're very nice guitars indeed. Certainly wouldn't say the best though, but extremely well made and consistant quality. For the price they go used in the States, and with the way the dollar is now, you can easily nab yourself an absolutely terrific instrument for a decent price.

But definitely take your time, and look at all the options. Bacchus certainly seem the business, as do Eggle or Edwards. With your price range, there's a hell of a lot of great instruments you could get.

    Ok...then....what is the best.....??????

I think PRS because of the overall package....
    Playabilty
    Tone
    Sustain
    Versatile with Split coil pickups
    Quality binding and finish
Unique locking tuning heads (you have to try them to believe them)

Has anyone got a better overall guitar??? Why??

I think I've narrowed it down between:

    http://www.guitarjapan.com/bacchus/spec/06licks-special.html

    http://www.thomann.de/ie/epiphone_elitist_casino_na.htm

Either way by the end of the month I'll have a new guitar :D Gonna spend friday in town trying out a few but I doubt I'll be swayed away from the bacchus and the casino.

Are they really that good? Have you got one yourself? Can't find any review about them so I'm a little in the dark, all I know is it looks AMAZING.

    There is no best.

There are a number of really superb guitar makers out there and, to be honest, you'll get to a level of quality and from there it just comes down to personal preference. Over the years I've been fortunate to own some superb guitars and basses, brands like Fender, Gibson, Rickenbacker, PRS, Bacchus, Hotwire, Lakland, ESP (real one), Schecter, Eggle, Edwards, Ibanez Prestige and more. Is a PRS "better" than an Eggle or a Bacchus in any of the categories you listed there? No, definitely not. Is it any "worse" than a Bacchus or an Eggle? No, it's not, they're all at an excellent level of quality, they're just different guitars. You're pretty much guaranteed something special when you buy one, the rest is just what features you're looking for. Don't get lost in they hype about a particular brand, just look for a high standard instrument with the features you want and take it from there.

I just suggested the Bacchus as it is a waaay nicer guitar imo. Like the Doc said, once you get to that level its all just personal preference.

Found a beautiful american telecaster in music maker today, spent about 4 hours playing it, nicest guitar I have ever played! I usually hate Fenders but this one was unbelievable!

Also played an epi casino and a gibson lp custom both of which really dissapointed me, expected alot more for the price of them... I think I'm a fender convert lol.

What didn't you like about the Casino? There's a big difference between a Korean Casino and a Japanese Elitist Casino. The Elitists are made in the Terada plant in Japan. They make guitars for Gretsch too - absolute quality.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 292 ✭✭Krsnik87

Yea it was a korean one but I think that telecaster ruined every guitar for me, it sounded too good and played so well! I doubt I'll ever get a chance to play an Elite cause they have to be ordered in and I wouldn't spend that much money without playing one first tbh.

I'll echo the "there is no best" sentiment...just different expensive and semi-expensive guitars for different styles and different looks.

But I'll see your PRS qualities and raise you with a Schecter price range that's hundreds (sometimes thousands) less.

    Full house. :pac:

PRS are nice guitars. I can't comment on the playability because genuinely I just can't get on with laquered necks (and other niggles mentioned already, heel etc), but ive checked out a few and the quality is top-notch.

That's what you're paying for tbh; it doesn't 'do' anything that a cheaper guitar can't, and I wouldn't even subscribe to the notion that they sound better either. But that's to miss the point. They're just very solid, well put together, well painted etc guitars. Certainly nobody needs a PRS, most guys would be just as happy with something cheaper. But if you've got the cash and you're after something with serious quality and longevity, I wouldn't begrudge anyone buying one.

The only thing I don't like about PRS is that they don't make a model for me :pac: The CE24 is the closest, but i'd take a J-Custom any day - better neck joint, better trem, (much) better fretwork, better flametop, less common....cheaper too :pac:

Shopping around for an american standard tele, found one in town that plays better then any guitar I've ever picked up (€1400), then found out a tele on gak.co.uk is about €800, bit of a price difference but same guitar

Both are the same 2008 3 color sunburst guitar, but would playability and tone differ at all? I always hear "you get what you pay for" but would this be the case here?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,992 ✭✭✭Johnny Storm

Are you saying they're the same model of guitar? If so, then there should be minimal difference but of course there always can be normal variations in the manufacturing process that in some way dont suit your playing style.
The main playing differences if any can surely be gotten rid of with a good setup.
I'd suggest emailing GAK (are they Klingon, BTW?) and asking them exactly what their returns policy is. AFAICR Thomann let you send back anything within 30 days for no reason at all. Seems to me that if GAK will take it back for a full refund then you are saving 600 at the risk of having to pay for shipping back to GAK.
I'd also go into the shop in town and show them the GAK price and ask what they can do for you.

Yeh....tell the shopkeeper that your best net price is €800 on Gak.co.uk

He will probably go down a bit.
If not, then do business elsewhere.

    Did you try dolphinmusic.co.uk
    Nice prices too....:D
