External door without breaking the bank

Hi, I want to replace an external door and over head fanlight on a period building. It is an ugly PVC door and I want to replace it with either a timber or composite door ... without breaking the bank. I had a quote of over 3k euro for a hardwood door and fanlight - it is a very nice looking door but I or my bank manager couldn't justify paying that amount! Anyone know where I could get what I'm looking for - cheap, cheerful and looks the part? Or maybe my expectations are too high. I also need a fire door for the kitchen. Any ideas? Thanks.
