I used to play a lot online but ultimately had to curtain my palying due to new family etc. Recently I've tried to get back into it but I can't handle the boredom of it all. I don't remember it being this monotonous and I'm starting to get involved in hands that are going to be -EV eventually.

How do you guys handle it?

I can watch tv etc but this is only distracting me.

The only way I can play online is to play 3-4 tables of Omaha Chris. If I play any less than 3 I can't do it for more than a few minutes unless there is something good on telly. I think this is my optimum number. More than 5 and I can't keep up, less than 3 I hate it. Even at my optimum number though I rarely play for longer than an hour. Some people just are not cut out for the online world, and I tihnk I am one of them. Maybe you are another?

Quite simply, it WAS ALWAYS this boring , the fact that you have a new family means your life is now more interesting. So unless you were making a real killing at the game, stop playing and enjoy the new family for a while longer. Don't waste it sitting at a pc playing -EV poker when your mind obviously wants to be elsewhere.
    imo

I'm trying to get back at 3-6 NLHE but starting at 1-2 at the minute. I'm also playing PLO but starting at .50/1 until I get back into the groove.

I haven't the time to play any reasonable Tournaments as they suck up too much family time.

I'm at a position where I can do both within reason and since I have pretty much given up poker over th elast 4 years I think its time to get back into it.

If you are finding it boring, then do something less boring!

At those levels the games will have changed significantly to when you played 4 years ago. How many tables do you play at once? Do you play 6 - max or fullring?

They are different and I suppose that's part of the re-learning curve but I don't think it has changed so much that i need to alter my game drasticly. I play 6-max and currently doing 2 to 3 tables - this is more a restriction of my monitor but I can't honestly say i want to go past 3, never have.

Daragh, it's not that poker is so boring that it's a chore, it that playing online can get monotonous - at least compared to live games. If you don't find it boring then a few tips would be handy.

i think its great that i get to listen to so much music while i'm playing, you could always start to find out about some type of music you don't know much about and listen to it while playing.

also, you could pick a player at your tables who seems to play quite regularly,or who is at several of your tables, and watch all the hands he's involved in. try to put him on a hand/range in each big pot, then make detailed notes about how he tends to play in big pots.

Well robin made two good points that I would agree with (off topic, but not being able to listen to music all day would be a major drawback of getting a normal job again).

I still enjoy the challenge of poker, I love to play games and be faced with decisions. That's what I want from poker really (as well as money), constant decisions. Which is why I love playing online, and hate playing offline.

Its funny but I would consider playing live to be very pretty monotonous. Its all 9 handed, its very slow, people seem to take pride in doing anything that wastes all of the tables time, and you get regaled with more bad beats than you thought possible by Bad Beat Joe. Sometimes you can have fun, but I very rarely think those games are very profitable - I would definitely go entirely mad if I had to playing in a casino regularly.

If I were you I would try playing 4+ tables. Every person has a multi-tabling amount where they rarely have much spare time, but they aren't rushed. At the moment i play 6/7 6max tables and 1 or 2 hu tables.

    What an excellent idea.
